The Asian Development Bank (ADB), in partnership with the ADB Institute, the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Institute, and the European Union's Support to Modernization of Mongolia Standardization System Project, organized and conducted a second annual Learning Opportunity focused on best practices in the area of integrated trade facilitation, one of the activities implementing the refined CAREC Trade and Transport Facilitation Strategy 2020. The Learning Opportunity brought together several of the key international institutions involved in sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) modernization, including the World Trade Organization (WTO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), ADB, and the European Union. This report summarizes the knowledge shared and obtained by government officials and private sector representatives from CAREC member countries.

This publication explores how Bhutan could boost its exports by addressing nontariff barriers to trade. It focuses on sanitary and phytosanitary measures and technical barriers to trade, and on export products that have the potential to increase their market share in Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It considers options including legal reforms, the upgrade of quality standards and laboratory equipment, and institution building of accrediting bodies and conformity assessment bodies. Practical recommendations suggest ways forward for both the public and private sectors.

Regional Integration in South Asia: Trends, Challenges and Prospects presents an objective assessment of trade and economic co-operation among South Asian nations and highlights policy issues to foster regional integration. This book brings forth the philosophical, conceptual and practical contours of the trade regionalism provisions under the GATT/WTO. It analyses SAARC as the regional integration organisation of South Asia along with identifying major challenges and bottlenecks faced by it in the process of achieving regional integration. It presents ways and methods through which SAARC can be made a more effective regional organisation. The book predominantly focuses on trade regionalism.
