The Most Profound Teachings of Luang Phor Wat Paknam Phra Mongkol-Thepmuni (Luang Phor Sodh) Presented and Explained by Phra Thepyanmongkol Phra Thepyanmongkol has been my student since 1973. At that time, he was a layman, named Mr. Sermchai Polpatthanarithi. I taught him samatha-vipassanā meditation based on Lord Buddha’s Four Foundations of Mindfulness to Dhammakāya and Nibbāna and the transcendental knowledge or vijjā of seed-element or dhatudhamma purifi cation, also called āsavakkhayaāa, which I had learned from and practiced with Luang Phor Sodh until he passed away. Then, I assigned Mr. Sermchai and Phra Khru Kaisornvilard (Natthanan Kulsiri) to collect the teachings of Luang Phor Sodh in order to publish them as a book. These teachings had been recorded by Phra Khru Vinaitorn Jou (Pali Grade 5) since 1938. Later, the Dhamma Practice for People Project of Wat Paknam Basijareaon was initiated for propagating Dhammakaya Meditation. On August 16th 1977, its committee published 500 copies of the fi rst book named, “Tactics and Strategy of Advanced Dhātudhamma Purifi cation (āsavakkhayaāa)” for distribution to those who reached advanced Dhammakāya Meditation. In 1985, 1200 copies of the second book were published. This was followed in 1993 by the third book, as well as 2,000 copies of the special edition incorporating volumes 1, 2 and 3. These were all for distribution to those who reached advanced Dhammakāya Meditation. The special edition was entitled “Vijjā Magga-phala Bisadarn 1-2-3” [Detailed Transcendental Path and Fruit Knowledge 1-2-3]. In addition, on October 10th 1984, 1200 copies of 63 Dhamma Talks by Luang Phor Sodh transcribed by Phra Pipatdhammagani (Umnat Upagutto) were published and distributed by the Dhamma Practice for People Project of Wat Paknam Basijareaon and the Dhammakāya Foundation for the 100th anniversary of Luang Phor Sodh’s decease. This book was entitled, “Biography, Work and 63 Dhamma Talks of Luang Phor Watpaknam (Phra Mongkol-Thepmuni).” FOREWORD IX Now, Phra Thepyanmongkol, Abbot of Wat Luang Phor Sodh Dhammakayaram and the President of the National Coordination Center of Provincial Meditation Institutes of Thailand, has collected and explained the teaching of Luang Phor Sodh in accordance with Four Foundations of Mindfulness to Dhammakāya and Nibbāna. The goal of this arduous effort is to substantiate that Dhammakāya Meditation as taught by Luang Phor Sodh is the Right Teaching of Lord Buddha based on evidence from the Pali Canon and to help Buddhists to understand this profound teaching better. Once, Luang Phor Sodh said to Somdej Pa or former Phra Sangharaja Pun Punnasiri, who was his nephew, “You will see that in the future, all people across the country will practice the way Wat Paknam is teaching.” Phra Thepyanmongkol deserves profound praise and gratitude for all his hard work in so many facets. I would like to congratulate Phra Thepyanmongkol and his team for their stupendous effort in completing this book, “Samatha- Vipassanā meditation in Accordance with the Four Foundations of Mindfulness to Reach Lord Buddha’s Dhammakāyas and Nibbāna,” as well as all the fi nancial supporters who have made this book possible. The book will be of immeasurable benefi t to those studying the Right Practice of Lord Buddha. Finally, I call upon the Triple Gem to bless you all to prosper in Lord Buddha’s Dhamma and in your life and work. May you all live happily and healthfully and attain your noble wishes. (Phra Rajbrahmathera - Veera Ganuttamo) Vice Abbot and Head of Meditation Masters, Wat Paknam Basijareaon

Buddhist Thought guides the reader towards a richer understanding of the central concepts of classical Indian Buddhist thought, from the time of Buddha, to the latest scholarly perspectives and controversies. Abstract and complex ideas are made understandable by the authors' lucid style. Of particular interest is the up-to-date survey of Buddhist Tantra in India, a branch of Buddhism where strictly controlled sexual activity can play a part in the religious path. Williams' discussion of this controversial practice as well as of many other subjects makes Buddhist Thought crucial reading for all interested in Buddhism.

EDITORS’ INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND We are experiencing an unprecedented period where wide ranging and disruptive major global change is taking place around us. In this context, the theme of Mindful Leadership and Sustainable Development provides a point of reference and pathway for understanding the contemporary chaotic situations. These disruptive changes challenge our understanding and meaning of humanity and truly question whether or not, we are able to live in a society where justice, equality, peace, and prosperity abound. In the Buddhist light, a focus is placed on understanding the Buddhist teachings to develop solutions for dealing with these wide-ranging problems. Both the scope of change and the response from a Buddhist approach are core to the content of this volume. It is of paramount importance that any investigation and development of solutions for the changes taking place, require guidance from the Buddhist philosophy. As a starting point for discussion, an initial focus is placed on providing a thorough and critical understanding of the character and context of change. In doing so, we also seek to clarify and outline the nature of a Buddhist approach. In completing this review, it is productive to see that given the complex issues being dealt with, the papers do generate different frameworks and viewpoints within the broad term of “approach.” The frameworks based on the Buddha´s teachings are not fully fixed and agreed upon by all. Therefore, our term “approach” refers to a set of arrangements and viewpoints that act to inspire further discussion and development. Given the above context, this volume is a collection of conference papers presented and published for the panel on the first sub-theme of UNDV 2019 on Mindful Leadership for Sustainable Peace on 13 May 2019 at the Tam Chuc International Convention Center, Ha Nam, Vietnam. The panel commemorates the occasion of the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations 2019. Through the contributions of participants and their papers at this workshop, this volume provides a diverse and rich range of thinking and wisdom rather than more traditional mainstream thinking or conventional wisdom. Treating the Buddha’s teachings as a basic theoretical reconstruction, we examine the relationships between societies and Buddhism. We combine the analyses of the conflicts, trends and dynamics affecting future global development with focused studies on a range of policy areas for improving societies. In the Buddhist light, our two most crucial aims in this period of disruption are to greatly increase the influence and impact of Buddhism as our foremost duty; and that the Buddhist responsibility contributes to creating a new foundation for Mindful Leadership and Sustainable Development.

The Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta is the most influential scripture in Buddhist meditation. It is the foundation text for the modern schools of 'vipassanā' or 'insight' meditation. The well-known Pali discourse is, however, only one of many early Buddhist texts that deal with mindfulness. This is the first full-scale study to encompass all extant versions of the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, taking into account the dynamic evolution of the Buddhist scriptures and the broader Indian meditative culture. A new vision emerges from this groundbreaking study: mindfulness is not a system of 'dry insight' but is the 'way to convergence' leading the mind to deep states of peace.
