This superb biography of Saint Athanasius, one of Christendom's most revered and celebrated figures, is published here complete with relevant illustrations. Frances Alice Forbes aims to give readers an informed perspective of Athanasius and his deeds. The society of Ancient Egypt in which he lived and developed his religious ethos, the hierarchy in which he ascended to prominence, and the political elements which played great influence in his life as a holy man receive their due consideration. The narrative Forbes constructs has at times the tone of a good story, vivid in telling the events. Although the circumstances described occurred long ago in Egypt, the dramatic and lively manner in which they are related brings the major figures of the church of the era to life. Throughout, Forbes keeps her narrative true to the established facts, and manages to strikes a respectful and observant tone given the religious subject matter. We hear of pivotal events, such as the activities of the Council of Nicea, and the exile of Athanasius from the city of Alexandria. The intense and violent opposition to his Christian faith is a constant threat, underlining the bravery and courage through which Athanasius defined his life. By the end of the text, the reader is aware of why Saint Athanasius remains a role model for Christians.

The Great Athanasius is an introductory survey of the life and work of the most dynamic pastor-theologian of the fourth century. From his birth and early years in Alexandria to the "Golden Decade," the book charts the life and work of Athanasius through a close study of his main writings and other important works. Central to his story is the "Arian controversy," the Council of Nicea, and the subsequent difficulties that emerged in building a consensus around the "very God, very Man" affirmation of the Nicene Creed. The eventual triumph of the theology of the Nicene Creed was largely due to his tireless efforts, which are carefully chronicled in this work. Though a controversial figure in his own lifetime, through both his theological insight and ecclesiastical leadership, and in his fidelity to his faith convictions, Athanasius proved to be "the great" church father and theologian of his age and one of the seminal Christian thinkers of all time.

St. Athanasius, the great champion of the Faith was born at Alexandria, about the year 296, of Christian parents. Educated under the eye of Alexander, later Bishop of his native city, he made great progress in learning and virtue. In 313, Alexander succeeded Achillas in the Patriarchal See, and two years later St. Athanasius went to the desert to spend some time in retreat with St. Anthony. In 319, he became a deacon, and even in this capacity he was called upon to take an active part against the rising heresy of Arius, an ambitious priest of the Alexandrian Church who denied the Divinity of Christ. This was to be the life struggle of St. Athanasius. In 325, he assisted his Bishop at the Council of Nicaea, where his influence began to be felt. Five months later Alexander died. On his death bed he recommended St. Athanasius as his successor. In consequence of this, Athanasius was unanimously elected Patriarch in 326. His refusal to tolerate the Arian heresy was the cause of many trials and persecutions for St. Athanasius. He spent seventeen of the forty-six years of his episcopate in exile. After a life of virtue and suffering, this intrepid champion of the Catholic Faith, the greatest man of his time, died in peace on May 2, 373. St. Athanasius was a Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

In this volume from the Fathers of the Faith series, you'll be introduced to Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. Who was he? What did he teach? Where and when did he live? Why is he an important figure in the history of the Church? In this accessible, bite-sized introduction, renowned author, speaker, and host Mike Aquilina gives an overview of Athanasius' life as a fourth-century Egyptian. Remembered as Athanasius the Great, he is one of the Church's most influential teachers and her greatest defender of the Incarnation. In addition to being a Doctor of the Church, Athanasius earned the title "Father of Orthodoxy" by standing firm against the Arian heresy - no matter the cost - as Bishop of Alexandria. Exiled five times, Athanasius was a lone voice crying out in the wilderness that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of the Father, is indeed consubstantial, one in being with the Father; and it is this divine Son who became incarnate for our salvation.
