Excerpt from Ross Grant Tenderfoot Then, too, I discovered over on a real Meadow Creek Valley - exactly the same place that Ross found - a real "Dutch Weimer" afflicted with snow-blindness, imprisoned for months at a time in the little valley because of the danger from snowslides on the mountainsides. And, by the way, if you should ever follow this same interesting trail from Cody up into the mountains, you would find "Ross Grant, Tenderfoot" an accurate guide-book until you reached the end of the stage route. There you would find that Miners' Camp is a fictitious name applied to a real place. And if you should chance to be in camp on the Fourth of July, you would realize fully the difficulties that Ross had to contend against in the vast snowfalls. For the year I visited the mountains the glorious Fourth was celebrated by snowshoe races down the mountainsides! There are snow-storms every month in the year there, but Miners' Camp is comparatively free from snow during August and September. These are the months, then, when gold hunters, "prospectors," are most numerous in the mountains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Ross Grant Gold Hunter Talking and thinking about it. The altitude and life in the open gives a fellow the appetite of a bear! I have eaten cold corn fritters in a miners' boarding-house and found them more appetizing than porterhouse steak in a' Broadway hotel. You might, as the Toddler would put it, eat till you bust one hour and be just as hungry the next. And, furthermore, for two reasons, it's not the women who discuss recipes, but the men. The first reason is, there are not enough women there to do much discussing, and the second is as good every man must be his own cook or starve. There fore, look out in the next book for further extensive references to rustling grub. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Tenderfoot Scene: Clearing in Santa Crus Mountains suitable for camp site. Costumes: Boy Scout Uniforms. (Sounds of chopping, talking, laughing, off stage, singing. Jim Fresh enters in ordinary boy's costume.) Jim. (Peering off into distance) Boy Scouts! Good! (Goes forward, then draws back) That Mastadon Patrol! (Frowns) Making a camp, I'll bet a hat! Shall I tell uncle to drive them off? It would serve them right! I was too small for their patrol, was I? I'll lick the whole bunch! (Pause) No, I won't! (Slaps leg) I have a better scheme than that! A girl could raise hob! That patrol leader has Feminitus now! I'll innoculate the rest! Oh, baby! What a lark! (Sounds off stage grow louder) I must get out of this! (Exit) (Enter Jack Pierce, patrol leader, followed by Caruso, Peachy and Willie, all dragging logs.) Jack. (Pausing) Here's the place we chose. It's clear of underbrush, handy to the creek, and shady. What do you fellows think of it ? Caruso. Just the ticket. We can go to sleep listening to the murmur of the brook and the cooing of the wood-ticks! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
