Britain has issued medals rewarding war service since at least the early nineteenth century, and increasingly through the period of its imperial expansion prior to 1914, but examples of many of the early types are now scarce. However, few families escaped some involvement with “the Great War” of 1914 18, and many still treasure the medals awarded to their ancestors for wartime service. Today, with a growing interest in British military history and particularly in family history and genealogy, more and more people want to trace their ancestors' past. This book looks in detail at the origin, types and varieties of the British medals awarded for general war service between 1914 and '18, and gives advice on researching the awards and their recipients.

Excerpt from Roll of Honour, 1914-1919 The next list, which is entitled Record of War Service, gives details, necessarily in a very concise form, of service in the Navy, Army, or Air Force, on the part of about seven thousand members of the University. Names which are included in the Roll of the Fallen are not repeated in this list. The particulars which are given have in general been furnished by the persons concerned, in reply to a circular issued by the University, and have been checked and supplemented by reference to Army and Navy Lists. Then follows a list of Orders, Decorations, and Mentions in Dispatches, which includes, with many other honours, five awards of the Victoria Cross. For Japan, as one of the victorious allies, World War I meant territorial gains in China and the Pacific. At the end of the war, however, Japan discovered that in modeling itself on imperial Germany since the nineteenth century, it had perhaps been imitating the wrong national example. Japanese policy debates during World War I, particularly the clash between proponents of greater democratization and those who argued for military expansion, thus became part of the ongoing discussion of national identity among Japanese elites. This study links two sets of concerns--the focus of recent studies of the nation on language, culture, education, and race; and the emphasis of diplomatic history on international developments--to show how political, diplomatic, and cultural concerns work together to shape national identity.
