The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has operated for more than three decades as a tourist ride over the breathtaking Cumbres Pass, ten thousand feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountains. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad narrow gauge tracks were originally laid in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. In 1970, the C&TS began taking tourists on six-hour trips between the two towns using the coal fired, steam locomotives that were originally used by the Denver & Rio Grande railroad. The 480 series locomotives date back to the 1920's. They were the last narrow gauge locomotives ever constructed in the United States.
