A celebrated triumph of historiography, Rockdale tells the story of the Industrial Revolution as it was experienced by the men, women, and children of the cotton-manufacturing town of Rockdale, Pennsylvania. The lives of workers, managers, inventors, owners, and entrepreneurs are brilliantly illuminated by Anthony F. C. Wallace, who also describes the complex technology that governed all of Rockdale?s townspeople. Wallace examines the new relationships between employer and employee as work and workers moved out of the fields into the closed-in world of the spinning mule, the power loom, and the mill office. He brings to light the impassioned battle for the soul of the mill worker, a struggle between the exponents of the Enlightenment and Utopian Socialism, on the one hand, and, on the other, the ultimately triumphant champions of evangelical Christianity.

Rockdale was first established as a railroad town in Milam County in 1874. Milam County was carved from the extensive Robertson's Colony in 1852, and it flourished with immigrants eager to move on after the Civil War severed the nation. For many, Rockdale was an easy choice for a new home because it was the end of the line. The fertile land, pleasant climate, and ample water attracted settlers, many of whom were of German, Czech, and Wendish descent. The presence of large deposits of lignite brought mining onto the scene in the early 1900s. From 1954 until 2009, the Aluminum Company of America operated a large plant that was six miles from Rockdale, which further changed the economy. The settlers were by no means the first humans to inhabit this land.

The socioeconomic issues that are embedded in rural communities have to be analyzed and explored to better understand the social issues within that community. The surmountable issues, which are identified in this community of Rockdale, have to be investigated and reported to the stakeholders in that community. Therefore, being a nonparticipant/observer to the issues in the community. The information that was gathered help to alert the pastors and the community leader of the issues that are overlooked in the community, which they may have not fully understood or being numb to the situations and issues within the community.

The Rockdale I Remember is a story of a girl growing up in a small town in Northern Illinois in the 1950's. It is a walk down memory lane to visit people, places and favorite things of that simple time of life.
