This guide includes relevant reference material from the code of practice "Specification for the reinstatement of openings in highways" (2002, ISBN 0115525386) which has been approved under s. 71 of the 1991 Act, but this guide is not intended as a replacement or abbreviated version of the Code. The guide covers the process from signing and excavating issues to reinstating and leaving the finished site, and for each section information is given on specification details and key tasks, as well as health and safety issues.

This code of practice sets out the statutory requirements for materials, performance and standards of workmanship for use in association with street works by utilities and other undertakers with apparatus in the street. It applies in England only and comes into effect on 1 October 2010, when it replaces the 2nd edition (2002, ISBN 9780115525384).
