In the context of political tensions and rising economic interdependence between Japan and China, this book studies how Japanese multinational companies try to minimize damages and manage their own fear and uncertainty to sustain their business interests. Using a qualitative approach, including over 150 interviews with Japanese and Chinese business and industry leaders, combined with statistical analysis of unique firm-level data, this book brings a ‘firm-level view’ to this crucial case of political conflict amid economic interdependence. It argues that there is wide variation in the degree of material damages Japanese multinationals sustain in the aftermath of political disputes, and how threatening they perceive the risks of political conflict to be. This book then goes on to evaluate the different responses to risk, from promoting Japan's culture through privately funded tactics and building common cause with the government, to diversifying a portion of assets abroad and even leaving China entirely. Around the world, food has probably never been as safe as it is today. However, periodic crises have aroused consumer anxiety and contributed to a general lack of confidence in the agro-industrial system. From 1960s to the early 1970s in East Asia, the Cold War bipolar system, centering on the US and USSR, shifted to a more complicated structure. Diplomatic issues, i.e. the textbook discussion, the Yasukuni debate, and the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands dispute cause political shocks to Japan-China relations, but economic exchange is maintained. Franziska Schultz discusses political shocks within bilateral relations, analyzing shocks in 2005, 2010 and 2012 causing economic spillovers, such as boycotts, property damage and decreasing numbers of Chinese tourists to Japan. The correlation of monthly trade data with political conflict values (2005-2014) created by the author is analyzed with a vector autoregression (VAR) model. A qualitative content analysis of reports by the Japan-China Economic Association (1981-2015) according to Früh (2011) evaluates whether spillovers play a role for Japanese economic actors involved in China business.

"Book Abstract and Keywords: The study of Japanese politics has flourished over the past several decades. This Handbook provides a state-of-the-field overview for students and researchers of Japanese. The volume also serves to introduce Japanese politics to readers less familiar with Japan. In addition, the volume has a theme of "evaluating Japan's democracy." Taken as a whole, the volume provides a positive evaluation of the state of Japan's democracy.
