This book is the result of the International Workshop on Time, Mind, and Behavior, which was held at the University of Groningen in September 1984. The aim of the workshop was to produce an up to date review of the state of the art in the field of time psychology. The rapid development of a cognitive outlook in experimental psychology has, among other things, un derlined the need for a reconsideration of time experience, the coding and representation of temporal information, and the timing of complex re sponses. Since the publication of Paul Fraisse's classical Psychologie du Temps in 1957, time psychology has slowly but steadily drawn an in creasing amount of attention, to a point where it now seems to be incorpo rated into the mainstream of research. At the same time a noticeable ten dency for a renewed general interest in time can also be traced in several other disciplines. These two observations supported our belief that it was time for a review of the sort we had in mind. At the close of 1983 we completed a project supported by the Dutch Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research in which we had stud ied the coding and retrieval of temporal information. This provided us with a plausible pretense for organizing a workshop. Around Christmas time 1983 we were able to mail a preliminary invitation to a number of our colleagues whom we knew to be currently active in the field.

This volume is dedicated to the late B.F. Skinner as a tribute to his pioneering work on the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. This science that he initiated studies the behavior of individual organisms under laboratory conditions. The volume describes a broad collection of representative and effective research techniques in the Experimental Analysis of Behavior; techniques derived solely from infrahuman subjects, which have been selected both for their utility in behavior analysis and for their potential value in expanding the use of behavior analysis in the neurosciences. By bringing together under one cover the expertise of individual authors regarding techniques based on their particular laboratory experiences, the book provides an informative and practical source of methods and techniques for those practising or interested in Experimental Analysis of Behaviour.

Profound progress has been made in the fields of chronobiology and psychobiology within the past decade, in theory, experiment and clinical application. This volume integrates these new developments on all levels from the molecular, genetic and cellular to the psycho social processes of everyday life. We present a balanced variety of research from workers around the globe, who discuss the funda mental significance of their approach for a new understanding of the central role of ultradian rhythms in the self-organizing and adaptive dynamics of all life processes. The years since the publication of Ultra dian rhythms in physiology and behavior by Schultz and Lavie in 1985 have seen a burgeoning realization of the ubiquity and importance of ultradian rhythms within and between every level of the psychobiological hierarchy. The experimental evidence lies scattered through a disparate litera ture, and this volume attempts, albeit in a highly selective manner, to bring together some of the different strands. The editors are very conscious of the omission of many important current aspects; e.g. we have not included any of the fascinating and indeed long and well-established experiments with plants (Bunning 1971, 1977; Guillaume and Koukkari 1987; Millet et al. 1988; 10hnsson et al. 1990) that are widely regarded as having initiated the whole field of chronobiology (De Mairan 1729). Neither have we reviewed recent developments on glycolytic oscillations, since a great deal of the seminal work was already completed by 1973 (Chance et al. 1973).
