Excerpt from Revised Estimates of Crop Acreages, New York, 1862-1919: A Study of Methods to Be Used in Revising Crop and Livestock Estimates of the United States Department of Agriculture Thus far the problem has been divided and work principally limited to a study of acreage. The dual object of the revision of acreage figures is: (1) To put the. Figures on a uniform basis from the time of the first complete estimates in 1866 to date, and (2) to have the absolute figures as nearly correct as possible. For both of these purposes the data collected decennially by the census are the best available gauge. The census acreage figures, with certain exceptions for specific reasons, are accepted as the most nearly correct basis from which to work. Further study of the census must be made as the work progresses, but the consequent changes should be slight.
