Reston Town Center is a model downtown for the 21st century. The dynamic urban culture of dramatic high-rise condos, lofts, and apartments overlooking urban parks and nearby office towers has the feel we want from our cities. Yet it was built on virgin dirt in Virginia's suburbs. The U.S. economy's shift to creative enterprises has produced a demand for lively places near work, ideally within walking distance, where people can relax or socialize, eat or drink during the day and into the night, go from store to restaurant without an annoying commute, visit an art gallery and then sit at an outdoor café. Reston Town Center is a collected work written by key players, notably Robert E. Simon, Robert A. M. Stern, Thomas J. D'Alesandro IV, Robert C. Kettler, Alan Ward, and Raymond A. Ritchie. Noted authors on the subject; Charles C. Bohl, Philip Langdon, and Tom Vanderbilt, write about this successful place based on new research.

"In light of the upcoming anniversary of the grand opening of RTC, Reston Community Center, Reston Historic Trust, and key participants in the development process recognized that the history of the creation of Reston Town Center had yet to be fully researched or documented. Targeting an update of Reston's history coincidental with the celebration of Reston's 50th and Reston Town Center's 25th anniversaries in 2014 and 2015, respectively, this group organized the Reston 50/25 Committee. Its first objective was to capture and record oral history of Reston Town Center over the past three decades, particularly in the planning and development phases ... What follows is a synthesis as it does not come close to capturing the depth and breadth of information generated. Rather, it is intended to highlight the overarching principles as identified, with the benefit of hindsight, by those on the front line over the project's history. Particular focus is on the earliest years of Reston Town Center development, It offers insight into the factors and attributes that have led to the success of RTC and suggests what might be considered to assure future town center developments' success. --
