Les actes de ces journées font état de réflexions, tant en France qu'à l'étranger, sur la restauration de marais, d'estuaires, de baies et de lagunes, incluant l'incidence sur les espèces et ressources. L'ouvrage regroupe une sélection des communications présentées devant un public de scientifiques, enseignants, aménageurs professionnels de la mer et conservateurs du littoral. Y sont présentés quelques grands chantiers (lagunes de Venise et de Tunis, baie du Mont-Saint-Michel, estuaire de Seine...), ainsi que des réalisations de tailles et de natures diverses. Des aspects particuliers de la biorestauration sont abordés au travers du traitement biologique des vases, ou celui des pollutions par hydrocarbures. Les aspects technico-économiques s'appuient sur des exemples accidentels ou naturels. Les aménageurs et les sociétés d'ingénierie écologique pourront trouver, dans ces documents, critères et méthodes d'évaluation scientifique pour quantifier les coûts de restauration d'écosystèmes en fonction de l'importance des " dégâts ".

Seagrasses are unique plants; the only group of flowering plants to recolonise the sea. They occur on every continental margin, except Antarctica, and form ecosystems which have important roles in fisheries, fish nursery grounds, prawn fisheries, habitat diversity and sediment stabilisation. Over the last two decades there has been an explosion of research and information on all aspects of seagrass biology. However the compilation of all this work into one book has not been attempted previously. In this book experts in 26 areas of seagrass biology present their work in chapters which are state-of–the-art and designed to be useful to students and researchers alike. The book not only focuses on what has been discovered but what exciting areas are left to discover. The book is divided into sections on taxonomy, anatomy, reproduction, ecology, physiology, fisheries, management, conservation and landscape ecology. It is destined to become the chosen text on seagrasses for any marine biology course.

This book presents a systemic view of the diversity of pressures and impacts produced by climate change and human actions. Erosion of biodiversity by changing ocean chemistry, the intensification of global change raises the problem of the adaptation of living resources. Land uses induce ecological imbalances leading to asphyxiation true coastal ecosystems. More than a billion tons of solid waste must be assimilated by the marine environment and food webs. Radioactive discharges emitted into the atmosphere or into the aquatic environment, raise the question of their future. Sea and Ocean series offers a transversal approach of the ocean system that leads to governance, sustainable resource management and adaptation of societies.

Elton sought to articulate more explicitly his vision of an entire field of invasion science. The 1958 book, aimed at an educated lay audience, was almost wholly descriptive, dominated by striking examples of the nature and scope of particular invasions beginning with the seven examples detailed in Chapter 1. From the materials in the proof copy and other sources, we can imagine a new edition would also have targeted biologists and been somewhat more technical and prescriptive. In autobiographical notes he penned near the end of his life, Elton wrote regarding EIAP, “This whole subject has deep significance for the study of plant and animal communities and their balance (or unbalance),”19 and indeed many of the reprints and notes refer to interactions among species and community-wide effects.
