Many authors have questioned the use of the index of the vector field, and of the Chern classes, if the underlying space becomes singular. This book discusses their explorations within the framework of the obstruction theory and the Chern-Weil theory.

This volume collects papers presented at the eighth São Carlos Workshop on Real and Complex Singularities, held at the IML, Marseille, July 2004. Like the workshop, this collection establishes the state of the art and presents new trends, new ideas and new results in all of the branches of singularities. Real and Complex Singularities offers a useful summary of leading ideas in singularity theory, and inspiration for future research.

This book presents the proceedings of the joint U.S.-China Seminar on Singularity and Complex Geometry held at the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy, Beijing, in June 1994. This was the first gathering of Chinese and American mathematicians working in these fields (several Japanese mathematicians also took part). The volume covers a wide range of problems in areas such as CR-manifolds, value distribution theory of holomorphic curves, topology of the complements of algebraic plane curves with singularities and arrangements, topology of non-isolated singularities, gauge theory on resolutions of simple singularities, and residues of foliations. The articles give accounts of research in these fast developing areas. Much of the material appears here for the first time in print. The purpose of this proceedings volume is to cover recent developments in singularity theory and to introduce young researchers from developing countries to singularities in geometry and topology.The contributions discuss singularities in both complex and real geometry. As such, they provide a natural continuation of the previous school on singularities held at ICTP (1991), which is recognized as having had a major influence in the field.
