Reset Control Systems addresses the analysis for reset control treating both its basic form, and some useful variations of the reset action and reset condition. The issues regarding reset control – concepts and motivation; analysis tools; and the application of design methodologies to real-world examples – are given thorough coverage. The text opens with a historical perspective which moves from the seminal work of the Clegg integrator and Horowitz FORE to more recent approaches based on impulsive/hybrid control systems and explains the motivation for reset compensation. Preliminary material is also included. The focus then turns to stability analysis for systems using techniques which account for various time- and frequency-domain criteria. The final section of the book is centered on control systems design and application. The PI+CI compensator is detailed as are a proposed frequency domain approach using quantitative feedback theory and ideas for design improvement. Design examples are given.

A reset controller is a linear controller whose output is reset to zero whenever its input and output satisfy an appropriate algebraic relationship. It has widespread industrial applications and is used in many modern day control systems. This monograph provides a comprehensive survey into three parts. Part I provides an historical literature review and presents some fundamental results. Part II deals with nonplanar reset systems and covers several reset rules that may be used to augment high-order controllers for plants of any order. It also provides several simulation studies showing that reset control strategies may allow to attain better performance with respect to the optimal ones obtained by classical continuous-time controllers. Part III focuses on planar systems and reports on a nontrivial generalization of the basic mechanisms emerging in Clegg integrators and First Order Reset Elements (FORE). Relevant case studies emerging in the automotive field are included. This monograph gives an in-depth assessment of the state-of-the-art and provides the reader with a starting point for further research into the increasingly important topic of Reset Control Systems.

Engineering systems operate through actuators, most of which will exhibit phenomena such as saturation or zones of no operation, commonly known as dead zones. These are examples of piecewise-affine characteristics, and they can have a considerable impact on the stability and performance of engineering systems. This book targets controller design for piecewise affine systems, fulfilling both stability and performance requirements. The authors present a unified computational methodology for the analysis and synthesis of piecewise affine controllers, taking an approach that is capable of handling sliding modes, sampled-data, and networked systems. They introduce algorithms that will be applicable to nonlinear systems approximated by piecewise affine systems, and they feature several examples from areas such as switching electronic circuits, autonomous vehicles, neural networks, and aerospace applications. Piecewise Affine Control: Continuous-Time, Sampled-Data, and Networked Systems is intended for graduate students, advanced senior undergraduate students, and researchers in academia and industry. It is also appropriate for engineers working on applications where switched linear and affine models are important.
