Summary descriptions are presented of various studies and programs which were conducted on airglow and aurora phenomena, in conjunction with related events, in support of the upper-atmosphere research program. Studies involving oxygen red-line emission, rocket measurements of sodium dayglow, upper atmospheric temperature measurements from the N2+ first negative band system and an observed red arc which were in the final phases of study, are presented either in an abstracted form or in preliminary rough-draft form prior to publication. Programs in progress but not completed are briefly described. A general description of various types of instrumentation for making optical studies of the light in the atmosphere is given. The presentation offers information useful in the design of the instruments rather than detailed particulars of any one design. (Author).

In support of the upper-atmosphere research program, work was conducted on the design construction and testing of instrumentation for the study of airglow and aurora phenomena. Summary descriptions are given of work performed by rocket instrumentation, ground-based equipment and instruments aboard high-flying aircraft. References are made to indicate where the material is published. Summaries are also presented of papers being prepared on interferometric studies of the lambda 5577A emission temperatures in aurora and of the lambda 10830A helium emission layer in the upper atmosphere. A third paper describes initial work performed on the theory of the F layer. (Author).

Work was conducted on the design, construction and testing of instrumentation for the study of day and night airglow phenomena. Descriptions are given of rocketborne instruments used for the measurement of day airglow. For daytime emissions, preliminary results indicate intensities of 500 rayleighs for the 5577A OI line, 1.5 kilorayleighs for the 5893A NaI doublet and less than 2 kilorayleighs for the 6300A OI line. Several special studies are presented on the night airglow data available, particularly in regard to the 5577A and 6300A line emissions. Description is given of a portable, batteryoperated filter photometer for the measurement of night air-glow emissions. It was designed as the data collecting device for the various stations required for a study of the latitudinal variation of night sky emissions. In the case of both day and night airglow photometers, the required calibration procedures were developed along with the design and development of the instruments. A procedure for performing the calibrations and a description of the optical dark room facility are given. (Author).

NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.
