From April 2009 until March 2016, the German Science Foundation generously supported the Priority Program SPP 1388 in Representation Theory. The core principles of the projects realized in the framework of the priority program have been categorification and geometrization, which are also reflected in the contributions to this volume. Apart from the articles by former postdocs supported by the priority program, the volume contains a number of invited research and survey articles. This volume covers current research topics from the representation theory of finite groups, of algebraic groups, of Lie superalgebras, of finite dimensional algebras, and of infinite dimensional Lie groups. Graduate students and researchers in mathematics interested in representation theory will find this volume inspiring. It contains many stimulating contributions to the development of this broad and extremely diverse subject.

The emergent mathematical philosophy of categorification is reshaping our view of modern mathematics by uncovering a hidden layer of structure in mathematics, revealing richer and more robust structures capable of describing more complex phenomena. Categorified representation theory, or higher representation theory, aims to understand a new level of structure present in representation theory. Rather than studying actions of algebras on vector spaces where algebra elements act by linear endomorphisms of the vector space, higher representation theory describes the structure present when algebras act on categories, with algebra elements acting by functors. The new level of structure in higher representation theory arises by studying the natural transformations between functors. This enhanced perspective brings into play a powerful new set of tools that deepens our understanding of traditional representation theory. This volume exhibits some of the current trends in higher representation theory and the diverse techniques that are being employed in this field with the aim of showcasing the many applications of higher representation theory. The companion volume (Contemporary Mathematics, Volume 684) is devoted to categorification in geometry, topology, and physics.

This text presents six mini-courses, all devoted to interactions between representation theory of algebras, homological algebra, and the new ever-expanding theory of cluster algebras. The interplay between the topics discussed in this text will continue to grow and this collection of courses stands as a partial testimony to this new development. The courses are useful for any mathematician who would like to learn more about this rapidly developing field; the primary aim is to engage graduate students and young researchers. Prerequisites include knowledge of some noncommutative algebra or homological algebra. Homological algebra has always been considered as one of the main tools in the study of finite-dimensional algebras. The strong relationship with cluster algebras is more recent and has quickly established itself as one of the important highlights of today’s mathematical landscape. This connection has been fruitful to both areas—representation theory provides a categorification of cluster algebras, while the study of cluster algebras provides representation theory with new objects of study. The six mini-courses comprising this text were delivered March 7–18, 2016 at a CIMPA (Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées) research school held at the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina. This research school was dedicated to the founder of the Argentinian research group in representation theory, M.I. Platzeck. The courses held were: Advanced homological algebra Introduction to the representation theory of algebras Auslander-Reiten theory for algebras of infinite representation type Cluster algebras arising from surfaces Cluster tilted algebras Cluster characters Introduction to K-theory Brauer graph algebras and applications to cluster algebras

Professor Xihua Cao (1920-2005) was a leading scholar at East China Normal University (ECNU) and a famous algebraist in China. His contribution to the Chinese academic circle is particularly the formation of a world-renowned 'ECNU School' in algebra, covering research areas include algebraic groups, quantum groups, algebraic geometry, Lie algebra, algebraic number theory, representation theory and other hot fields. In January 2020, in order to commemorate Professor Xihua Cao's centenary birthday, East China Normal University held a three-day academic conference. Scholars at home and abroad gave dedications or delivered lectures in the conference. This volume originates from the memorial conference, collecting the dedications of scholars, reminiscences of family members, and 16 academic articles written based on the lectures in the conference, covering a wide range of research hot topics in algebra. The book shows not only scholars' respect and memory for Professor Xihua Cao, but also the research achievements of Chinese scholars at home and abroad.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Representation Theory and Algebraic Geometry, held in honor of Joseph Bernstein, from June 11–16, 2017, at the Weizmann Institute of Science and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The topics reflect the decisive and diverse impact of Bernstein on representation theory in its broadest scope. The themes include representations of p -adic groups and Hecke algebras in all characteristics, representations of real groups and supergroups, theta correspondence, and automorphic forms.
