Excerpt from Report of the Public Archives: For the Year, 1938 Sir, - I have the honour to present to you, with this letter, the report of the Public Archives for the year 1938. The first thing to note is that the year which has just ended has seen the work of the department grow considerably: first, in order to bring its publications up to date, it was necessary to publish three reports in less than fifteen months; and, secondly, the requests for information grew to such a point that the correspondence has nearly doubled its total of previous years. In the second place, the executive has completed a reorganization of the staff and its duties, permitting a better distribution of the work, a greater expedition of research and a more systematic classification of the collections. Finally a general program has been drawn up which is intended to complete certain calendars unfinished for twenty years, to calendar several collections (both old and new) and then to prepare a short but complete guide to the manuscript material in the Archives. This program will supply the different government departments, historians, and research students with facilities and aids to work which are of more importance nowadays than ever. During the year superannuation has unfortunately removed several members of the staff. The department has seen with especial regret the retirement, after fifty years of invaluable service, of M. Francis J. Audet, LL.D., Director of the Index and Information Division. The department has also to record, with feelings of deep regret, the death of its representative in Europe, Mr. H. P. Biggar. A recognized scholar and noted historian, in thirty-two years he contributed more than any other person towards enriching the Archives with documentary material. With respect to acquisitions, the year 1938 has been an unusually fruitful one, because of the important collections and numerous individual items that have entered the Archives. I must be content to note here only the chief of them. The papers of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, on deposit in the Archives for some time, have now definitely become its property. For this gift the department wishes to express again its sincere thanks to M. Robert Laurier. As documentary title to these papers, let us quote the letter in which M. Laurier gave the collection to the Canadian Archives: - Ottawa, May 2, 1938. Mr. Gustave Lanctot, Dominion Archivist, Ottawa. Dear Mr. Lanctot, It is already several years since at your suggestion I placed on deposit in the Public Archives the correspondence and personal papers of my uncle. Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
