We found considerable difficulty in forming a satisfactory Opin ion upon. This subject. Lst, on account of the uncertainty of the data for computing the average quantity of water required by each family, the difference in the habits of the people of differ ent cities, not admitting of any general rule for determining the proper measure of supply. 2d, \on account of the rapid increase, though at unequal rates, in the population of Boston. We believe that it is a common opinion amongst householders who are now possessed of wells and cisterns for rain water, that 80 gallons of water a day, for each family, are sufficient for all domestic uses. On turning however to the quantity supplied by waterworks in cities where such works are established, it will be found that a larger quantity than this is used in the dwelling houses. Thus the eight water companies of London, in 1833, supplied imperial gallons to tenants, or 187 gallons to each tenant daily.
