Le soufisme africain des XIXe et XXe siècles s'inscrit dans une culture de rénovation islamique portée par des figures charismatiques. Il en est ainsi de Cheikh Ibrahim Niasse (1900-1975) fondateur de la Fayda Tijaniyya, un courant religieux né en 1929 et qui a donné lieu à une communauté forte de plusieurs millions de fidèles répartis dans différents pays. Les continuateurs et propagateurs de la Fayda ont tenté de perpétuer l'oeuvre de rénovation du maître en redéfinissant la géographie de la communauté, à partir de l'exaltation de la pratique des voyages et de la circulation. Cette politique du voyage redéfinit ainsi tout un espace d'imagination et d'action.
