When social democratic politicians in the 1990s moderated their ideas and policies as part of a turn towards the "third way," they were assailed as traitors to the cause. Remaining Loyal demonstrates that while third way social democrats in Quebec and Saskatchewan supplemented certain social democratic ideas with more right-wing economic programs, their public policies remained true to the original spirit of social democracy. Drawing on a range of archival resources, David McGrane traces the evolution of social democracy in Quebec and Saskatchewan from their respective origins in social Catholic thought and agrarian protest movements at the turn of the twentieth century to the most recent Parti Québécois and New Democratic Party governments. In doing so, he reconstructs the public policies of traditional social democracy from the postwar era and the third way in the 1990s and early 2000s and finds both differences and continuities. McGrane contends that remaining loyal to core social democratic values is exactly what differentiates the third way from neo-liberalism in Saskatchewan and Quebec. Although Loyal Sisters is about Loyal Sisters it is not only for them. From ethnographic exploration into mainly two churches: Messa Pentecostal and High Parish, the religiosity and faith in the Triune God, through the Holy Spirit (pneumatology), of Loyal Sisters is realized. They are faithful and avid ecclesiastical worshipers amidst a tide of dwindling church-attendance. We can reflect on their faith-lifestyle and ontological passion for God which propels them into action in the British church. We discover their values and beliefs and how they transcend and redeem adversity and/or immigration, patriarchy, and racism, “come what may,” and seek for womanist, cultural, and religious change in the church through the Spirit. Furthermore, this book provides an insight into my autobiography/womanist testimonies as a British, Black, female practicing, ecumenical Christian who is an ally with Loyal Sisters. You do not have to be a Loyal Sister or identify as female of color to read this book. The DePeyster family of New York was one of the first families of New Amsterdam, ranking among the wealthiest of New York during the early days of the American Republic. The DePeysters were also unapologetic Loyalists, serving in the King's forces during the American Revolution. After the war, the four sons left the United States for Canada and Great Britain. Ten years later, one son, Frederick DePeyster, returned to New York, embraced his Loyalist past, and utilized his British connections to become a prominent and successful merchant. The DePeysters went on to become true Patriots, zealously supporting US interests in the War of 1812. This book examines the forces at work in the lives of the DePeyster family and the decisions they made to navigate their way from loyal subjects of the British crown to loyal citizens of the United States. How this transformation occurred challenges many of the preconceived ideas we hold both about the Revolution and the formation of the American identity in the years following the war.
