The book begins with a discussion of Benjamin Peirce’s linear associative algebra and then considers this and other early influences on the logic of is son, C. S. Peirce. A discussion of the early algebraic logicians such as Boole, Jevons and De Morgan follows, culminating in a detailed analysis of C. S. Peirce’s seminal paper “Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives.” His further developments of the 1880s, including quantificational logic are also traced. At the end of his life, Peirce looked to his graphical logic system - the existential graphs - to provide the logic of the future.

This book is an account of the important influence on the development of mathematical logic of Charles S. Peirce and his student O.H. Mitchell, through the work of Ernst Schröder, Leopold Löwenheim, and Thoralf Skolem. As far as we know, this book is the first work delineating this line of influence on modern mathematical logic.

This volume contains a facsimile reprint of the 1883 Boston edition of Studies in Logic by Members of the Johns Hopkins University, edited by Charles S. Peirce. In relation to this work there are three mutually related aspects of Peirce’s thought which deserve to be particularly emphasized: the community structure of science as propagated and practiced by Peirce; his consideration of the fundamental relationship between logic and semiotics; and his emphatic plea for a historisation of science and, hence, of semiotics. Peirce’s Studies in Logic is preceded in this volume by a portrait of Peirce as scientist, mathematician, historian, logician and philosopher by Max. H. Fisch, and a history of semiotics and Charles S. Peirce by Achim Eschbach.
