In India, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) were started in 1975 to cater to the needs of the rural economy. Operating mainly at the district level, these RRBs pay particular attention to the credit requirements of small farmers, artisans, and agricultural workers. The capital of RRBs comes from contributions by India's central government, concerned state governments, and sponsor banks at a ratio of 50:15:35. Regional Rural Banks (also RRBs), whose development process was started in October 2, 1975 are next-door level banking organizations progressively providing services in 644 notified districts of 27 States in India with 20,904 branches till 31st March 2016. They have been come into existence with a motive to serve first and foremost the rural areas of India with basic banking and financial services. Regional Rural Banks were established under the provisions of an Ordinance approved on September 26, 1975 and the RRB Act.1976 to offer adequate banking and credit facilities for agriculture and non-agricultural sectors. In the current paper, an attempt has been made to study the financial performance of Regional Rural Bank (RRB), keeping in view the present trends of regional rural banks in the national perspective. The study is analytic and exploratory in nature, and makes use of resultant data. The study found that the performance of Regional Rural Banks in India has drastically improved from the period of its establishment, as steps for their improvement were initiated by the Government of India after the amalgamation process.

Agriculture and rural sectors play an important role in India's overall development strategy in terms of income and employment generation and poverty alleviation. Great significance has, therefore, been accorded to developing appropriate institutions and mechanisms for catering to the credit requirements of these sectors. The government of India has promoted Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). These banks are state-sponsored, regionally-based, and rural-oriented. Besides the RRBs, commercial and co-operative banks have also been catering to the credit requirements of the rural sector. The burden of indebtedness in rural India is exceptionally enormous. Despite major structural changes in credit institutions and forms of rural credit in the post-Independence period, the exploitation of the rural masses in the name of credit facility is one of the most pervasive and persistent features of rural India. The objectives of this paper are to assess the growth pattern of RRBs; to examine the credit distribution and geographical distribution of RRBs. The analysis period of the study is from inception (1975) to till (2005) date.The overall position of RRBs in India is not quite encouraging. The poor credit-deposit ratio is still making dent on the improval functioning of RRBs. Since the RRB is supposed to be a bank for poor people, it's presence in all the states of country especially in underdeveloped States can make things better. The government should spread the branches of RRBs at grass root level to provide such banking service to the really needy rural people. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the bank management and the sponsored bank to take corrective measures to raise the credit-deposit ratio of the bank that would make RRBs relevant in the rural India.
