From debut author Lio Min comes BEATING HEART BABY, a tender love letter to internet friendships, anime, and indie rock, perfect for fans of HEARTSTOPPER When Santi arrives in Los Angeles, he hopes he can move past the loss of the childhood internet friend he’d known only as Memo. And in his new high school’s marching band, Santi gets a taste of the community he’s always longed for. Even the clashes with his section leader, Suwa, lead to Suwa opening up to Santi first as a friend, then something more. But when Suwa gets a shot at the rock star life he’s always dreamed of, the very thing that drew them to each other—a shared devotion to art—tests their budding relationship. Over years, Santi and Suwa glide and soar, crash and fall, together and apart. This twinned tale about the transitions between boyhood and manhood, internet confidants and IRL friends, the face in the crowd and the star on the stage, stakes and succeeds in making the bold claim: that Santi and Suwa’s fantastic dreams are as essential as art and love and life itself.

Winner of the 2021 Music & Drama Education Award for Outstanding Drama Education Resource Much of the theatre we make starts with a script and a story given to us by someone else. But what happens when we're required to start from scratch? How do we begin to make theatre using our own ideas, our own perspective, our own stories? A Beginner's Guide to Devising Theatre, written by the artistic directors of the award-winning young people's performance company Junction 25 and is aimed at those new to devising or wanting to further develop their skills. It explores creative ways to create original theatre from a contemporary stimulus. It offers a structure within which to approach the creative process, including ideas on finding a starting point, generating material, composition and design; it offers practical ideas for use in rehearsal; and it presents grounding in terminology that will support a confident and informed approach to production. The book features contributions from some of the young performers who have been a part of Junction 25's work to date, as well as key artists and companies that work professionally in devised theatre, including case studies from Quarantine, the Team, Mammalian Diving Reflex, Nic Green and Ontroerend Goed. The work of Junction 25 is used to illustrate the concepts and ideas set out in the book. Ideal for any student faced with the challenge of creating work from scratch, A Beginner's Guide to Devising Theatre offers constructive guidance, which supports the requirements of students taking Drama and Theatre Studies courses. The book includes a foreword by theatre critic Lyn Gardner.

Michel Chion is renowned for his explorations of the significance of frequently overlooked elements of cinema, particularly the role of sound. In this inventive and inviting book, Chion considers how cinema has deployed music. He shows how music and film not only complement but also transform each other. The first section of the book examines film music in historical perspective, and the second section addresses the theoretical implications of the crossover between art forms. Chion discusses a vast variety of films across eras, genres, and continents, embracing all the different genres of music that filmmakers have used to tell their stories. Beginning with live accompaniment of silent films in early movie houses, the book analyzes Al Jolson’s performance in The Jazz Singer, the zither in The Third Man, Godard’s patchwork sound editing, the synthesizer welcoming the flying saucer in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the Kinshasa orchestra in Felicité, among many more. Chion considers both original scores and incorporation of preexisting works, including the use and reuse of particular composers across cinematic traditions, the introduction of popular music such as jazz and rock, and directors’ attraction to atonal and dissonant music as well as musique concrète, of which he is a composer. Wide-ranging and original, Music in Cinema offers a welcoming overview for students and general readers as well as refreshingly new and valuable perspectives for film scholars.

In this volume the policy of review by anonymous referees and minor correction by the editor has been continued, but perhaps should not be extended without an agreed policy statement by the Society. Our choice is minimal revision with rapid publication or proper review with some delay in publication. The editor wishes to express his gratitude to Ann Richardson, Joann Fish, Lance Johnson, and Philip Weinbrecht for their invaluable help in the preparation of this volume. Ian S. Longmuir v BRIEF HISTORY OF ISOTT The Society endured a long gestation period. During the 1960s its formation was discussed at a number of international meetings devoted to oxygen in biological systems. Prominent among a great number of such gatherings were those held at the Institute of Diseases of the Chest, London 1960; Bedford College, London 1963; Queen Elizabeth College, London 1963; and the Seventh Bad Oeynhausen Conference, 1967. At first, reservations were expressed about the desirability of forming a highly specialized society which might not achieve the "critical mass" necessary for its continued existence. However, the 1971 meeting in the Max Planck Institut fur Arbeitsphysiologie, Dortmund, answered these doubts, and Dr. Melvin Knisely commenced planning a very successful inaugural meeting in South Carolina. At this meeting in 1973 in Charleston and Clemson, the Society was formed with the customary remit of the promotion of scientific exchanges.

Reminiscent of human sagas such as The Alchemist and the Life of Pi, AKIN unapologetically delves deeper into the human condition, masterfully weaving the triumph of the human spirit against its darkest shadows. "The book is written in such a way as to provoke pathos and curiosity." - Charles Franklin, Midwest Book Review Aydan awakens to voices he does not recognize - fearing the worst, he prays, hoping they will leave him. But it's too late. Other villagers witness his waking nightmare, and he is quickly imprisoned, set to await vile rituals meant to rid him of demons. But the fear that has followed him all his life is soon replaced with anger, as betrayal and a new friendship urge him passionately towards freedom. He soon finds himself on a unknown path, flung into the mystical, grand desert that surrounds him. Robin Murarka's AKIN explores philosophy, existentialism, and the human condition within a unique, immersive setting. It escapes the confines of modern taboos to present an ancient, archaic world whose brutality and humanity is true to form. If you enjoy epic narratives that skillfully juxtapose internal struggles against the backdrop of huge, worldly events, you will find yourself lost within the pages of AKIN, clamoring for more long after the story is over.

Queen Malice and her team set off toward Jabberwock Valley, where they hope to find a new body for their friend and teammate, the woefully decapitated Jabberwock. Their journey will no doubt be fraught with peril, but Malice is more concerned with the crushing withdrawals she's going through, due to running out of black rose. She hopes she can keep it together, despite her bouts of viciousness from a malfunctioning heart. Any further breakdowns could lead to very awkward social situations. And the team is stressed enough already, what with the agonies of a dramatic love triangle, and the threat of a powerful chief who wants to capture Malice, for reasons that aren't entirely clear yet. Can they arrive at Jabberwock Valley in one piece? And without Sleepy B committing a childish mistake requiring rescue? Or without the Cheshire Cat offending any of the team with his sharp tongue? Or without Malice breaking either the Mad Hatter's or Humpty's heart? No doubt something is bound to happen. Malice just hopes she can get through the whole nerve wracking mess without having to resort to any black rose "substitutes" along the way.
