This is the last of a series of books describing the history, science, medicine, artistic representation and cuisine of various body parts. The first was Man and the Liver – the role of the liver, from early times to the present (Matador, December 2011), followed by NEPHROSAPIENS, dealing with the kidney (Matador, December 2011) andSPLANCREAS – spleen, pancreas, heart, lungs, brain and testicles (Matador, January 2013) and A Muscle Odyssey – history, evolution, embryology, anatomy, physiology, pathology of muscle and its roles in art and music (Matador, March 2013). Robert D. Cohen has divided Skin and Bone into separate sections for skin and bone, though they often overlap. Chapter 1 covers the evolution, anatomy and physiology of the skin. Chapter 2 details skin diseases, Chapter 3 is on the evolution, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry of bone and Chapter 4 informs the reader about bone diseases. The book also contains a glossary and an index. Like Robert’s previous books, Skin and Bone will appeal to readers interested in human biology.

This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases. This Surgeon General's Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives. This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals' reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions.

There are major introductory sections on the scientific basis of disease; and in the system-based clinical sections genetic predisposition, pathophysiology, pathogenesis, molecular mechanisms, and cell biology are covered in depth for all significant medical syndromes. Chapters are not only "evidence based" but also on clinical experience and a thorough survey of all the relevant literature. Throughout, the approach of OTM is humane and ethical and, at the same time, factual, reliable, honest(especially where knowledge is limited) and rigorously scientific. This is not just a textbook of "First World" medicine. It provides practical guidance for doctors working in a variety of medical setting the value of a logical clinical approach rather than immediate resort to expensive imaging and laboratory tests. Moore of the contributing authors than ever before are from outside Europe, including strong representation of North American medicine. The new editorial team has ensured that the OTM continues to reflect rapid changes in medical practice: there are new sections on intensive care, alcohol and drug abuse, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, world health, clinical trials and evidence-based medicine, adolescent medicine, sports medicine, and emergency medicine; more than half the contributors are new for this edition; and most of the text has been heavily revised. The striking new page and cover design reflect the significant changes made in this new edition. The Textbook is illustrated by over 2000 two-color diagrams and many color Plates. The index is the most detailed and user-friendly of any major medical textbook: in an emergency, the reader can access information quickly- whether on the ward, in office or at home. Like its predecessors, OTM4 will be the trusted and ultimate reference in libraries, hospitals, doctors' consulting rooms, solicitors' offices, press offices, and primary care practices worldwide.

A beaut story about one very ugly kid. Robert Hoge was born with a tumour in the middle of his face, and legs that weren't much use. There wasn't another baby like him in the whole of Australia, let alone Brisbane. But the rest of his life wasn't so unusual: he had a mum and a dad, brothers and sisters, friends at school and in his street. He had childhood scrapes and days at the beach; fights with his family and trouble with his teachers. He had doctors, too: lots of doctors who, when he was still very young, removed that tumour from his face and operated on his legs, then stitched him back together. He still looked different, though. He still looked ... ugly. UGLY is the true story of how an extraordinary boy grew up to have an ordinary life, and how that became his greatest achievement of all.

Numerous diseases in the areas of orthopaedics, rheumatology, and radiology can only be completely diagnosed if the corresponding conditions of the skin and mucous membranes are included in the diagnostic work-up (skin-bone). Conversely, dermatologic assessment of skin symptoms in isolation may lead to serious delays and errors in the diagnosis and treatment of associated changes in the musculoskeletal system. This monograph gives an interdisciplinary synopsis, from a dermatologic and clinical radiologic perspective, of 85 disease entities which in practice are likley to present. For orientation purposes the main dermatologic and radiologic symptoms are presented in table form at the beginning of the book.
