Bloating is most commonly caused by turning hungry stock on to succulent pasture, such as clover or alfalfa. If the pasture is moist from rain, dew, or frost, the danger is greater. Prevention lies in giving the animals a liberal feed Of hay before admitting them to the pasture. Restricting the length of grazing time is another means. In serious cases the use of a trocar, by a qualified veterinarian, for puncturing the paunch to remove the gas is advisable to prevent suffocation.
