Excerpt from Recent Advances in Physical and Inorganic Chemistry IN view of the fact that the last edition of this book was exhausted within little more than a year of its publication, it might be supposed that a fourth edition could have been prepared simply by reprinting the third one; but on account of the important researches which have been carried out within the last twelve months, it was felt that it would be better to rewrite part of the volume rather than to let it go out incomplete. As a result, this edition differs considerably from its predecessor. Additions have been made to the chapter on absorption spectra; the position of the rare earth elements in the Periodic Table has been more fully examined the newer work on mass Spectra has been described; the problem of transmutation has been given increased space to include the work of Rutherford on nitrogen; and the chapter on the isotopes has been slightly extended.
