First published in 1988, this book analyses the changes that took place in the economic organisation of the British construction industry throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, in particular considering its social and economic structure and examining the causes of its poor industrial record. Michael Ball describes how the major firms survived the economic slump between 1973 and 1982 - when construction workloads collapsed - by substantially restructuring their operations, relationships with clients, workforces and subcontractors. Detailed attention is paid to construction firms, the workers they employ, the influence of trade unionism and the role of other agencies in the building process. Reissued at a particularly challenging time for the British construction industry, this relevant and practical title will be of value to students and academics of economics and social change, as well as those on courses for construction professionals.

Author Eric Dahlin has been in the commercial and residential construction industry for over fifty years. He has worked professionally throughout the construction industry, specializing in light gage steel panelization of architectural designed homes and commercial buildings. He impacted the residential industry in the early 1970s by designing one of the first in-ground homes in central New York. Eric's involvement in the residential industry led him to believe that there is a better way for home ownership in this country. People buy homes, averaging a quarter of a million dollars, and know absolutely nothing about what they are buying. They go directly to realtors and home-building contractors with little or no knowledge of the product selections used in the construction process of their home. Eric wants all Americans to have the opportunity for a free education on all facets of home ownership before making a 30 year financial commitment. Eric is in the process of marketing an online educational site, virtualhomesshow.org to prospective homeowners where they can become educated on the biggest investment of their lives by writing their own specifications and selecting each product in their home before they approach a home-building contractor. About the Author Immediately upon completion of his service commitment in the U.S. Army, Eric Dahlin started his professional construction career as a union carpenter in Syracuse, New York. His rise through the ranks of leadership in the industry included foreman, superintendent, and owner of a large commercial construction company. This company built the first enclosed shopping mall in central New York. Entering the Corporate world in the late 1970s, Eric continued his leadership with two national restaurant chains. For Sambo's Restaurants of Santa Barbara, California, he was responsible for expansion in the northeast of the United States. In the 1980s he led Arby's restaurants in international expansion and development. His success was attributed to his use of the first panelized energy efficient building program. This reduced the time of construction by half and increased energy efficiency by 15%.

“Using each major lesson learned during the decade-plus of rebuilding lower Manhattan after 9/11—each achievement and setback—From the Ground Up offers Americans, for the first time, a comprehensive, practical, and inspiring plan for re-engineering the entire country. It’s about time.”—Governor George Pataki Confronted with helping to rebuild the ruins of lower Manhattan in the aftermath of September 11, Ambassador Charles A. Gargano spent the next twelve years cleaning up and revitalizing Ground Zero and developing One World Trade Center. The experience was life affirming and provided a signature testament of hope in the shadow of one of the worst events of the twenty-first century. As a legendary real estate icon, engineer, and Republican strategist who served in the US government for three decades, Gargano has become a thought leader and pioneer in the field of re-engineering. He knows what does and doesn’t work and how to apply that experience to the foundation of America. Gargano’s approach to engineering powerful, beautiful structures and planting seeds of hope in our greatest cities has given him a distinct vantage point and unique voice. Seasoned with authority, his advice is indispensable for rebuilding an America at risk of ruin. Now, facing the most politically divisive moment in generations, Gargano applies his decades of experience in public service toward the task of re-engineering our nation’s political and moral infrastructure From the Ground Up with traditional, values-based leadership. In the words of Gargano, the only person who can get a grip on this off-course country—and steer it true—is you.
