An organized guide to turning a dream into a reality without sacrificing achievements in other areas of life. Studies have shown that personal health directly affects professional well-being and vice versa. As one decreases, the other suffers. Conversely, as one increases, the other rises as well. By learning how to effectively and evenly pull the strings of both aspects of life—avoiding a collision of priorities—all goals can be reached with less stress and better health. Ready, Set, Achieve! digs into the psyche of setting a goal, creating a plan of action, carrying out those action steps, finding support systems, and cycling back around to do it all over again for a new and higher goal. Personal anecdotes from authors Yuri Diogenes and Jodi Miller punctuate each chapter and give an inside view into overcoming their own struggles and turning them into tangible success stories. Both authors rely on real-life experience to shed light on how to transform one’s mind and body and still create balance. Diogenes shares the tale of his amazing 100-pound weight loss and subsequent appearance on a national-qualifying bodybuilding stage in one of the biggest states in the country, while rising to the top ranks in his IT career. And Miller describes her feat of lifting almost three times her bodyweight at national- and world-level lifting championships, while remaining well rounded in both her athletic and career worlds. Ready, Set, Achieve! shows the road to just that: being your overall best.

What types of instructional experiences help K-8 students learn science with understanding? What do science educators, teachers, teacher leaders, science specialists, professional development staff, curriculum designers, and school administrators need to know to create and support such experiences? Ready, Set, Science! guides the way with an account of the groundbreaking and comprehensive synthesis of research into teaching and learning science in kindergarten through eighth grade. Based on the recently released National Research Council report Taking Science to School: Learning and Teaching Science in Grades K-8, this book summarizes a rich body of findings from the learning sciences and builds detailed cases of science educators at work to make the implications of research clear, accessible, and stimulating for a broad range of science educators. Ready, Set, Science! is filled with classroom case studies that bring to life the research findings and help readers to replicate success. Most of these stories are based on real classroom experiences that illustrate the complexities that teachers grapple with every day. They show how teachers work to select and design rigorous and engaging instructional tasks, manage classrooms, orchestrate productive discussions with culturally and linguistically diverse groups of students, and help students make their thinking visible using a variety of representational tools. This book will be an essential resource for science education practitioners and contains information that will be extremely useful to everyone including parents directly or indirectly involved in the teaching of science.

This book is for people in recovery. We ask and answer basic questions about addiction, relapse, and recovery. We believe addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory, and related circuitry, characterized by craving, loss of control, physical dependence, and tolerance. Genetics, together with bio-psycho-social-spiritual factors, account for the likelihood a person will develop an addiction or related disorder. Relapse happens: a return to drinking, using, other addictive behavior, or an increase in harm from addiction. Yet, recovery is an idea whose time has come. Recovery is a different, better way of life with purpose and meaning. We suggest addiction management as a way recovering people can maintain change (abstinence or harm reduction), reduce risks for relapse, prevent relapse, develop a recovery lifestyle, confront relapse when necessary, and achieve well-being. Current research, recognized theories, and the lived experiences of hundreds of people in recovery ground and guide book content. The book has three parts and fifteen chapters. A person in recovery introduces each chapter. We show how to develop, implement, and evaluate addiction management plans. Each chapter ends with summary statements and addiction management applications. References and a list of websites complete the book. Family and friends of recovering people will find the material useful. Addiction professionals can use the book to help clients realize recovery and prevent relapse. Are you ready? Get set. Go!

Improvisation - the creation of a unique combination of musical content within a musical context - is core to musicianship. As authors Suzanne L. Burton and Alden H. Snell II demonstrate, students already build skills that drive improvisation when they listen to music or imitate rhythmic patterns. Building from this observation, Ready, Set, Improvise! addresses improvisation in a cogent, clear, practical, and sequential manner. As an essential resource for music educators, this book synthesizes what we know about exemplary music teaching and learning, provides an easy-to-follow sequence for guiding improvisation instruction, and gives techniques for assessment of students' skill and conceptual development. Burton and Snell explore lessons in singing, rhythmic chanting, moving, and playing instrument exercises that prepare students to improvise. This all-in-one guide gives music teachers the necessary tools with which to plan the next steps for students to become independent musicians.
