The flora of the Canadian Arctic contains 236 rare vascular plant taxa that represent a unique part of Canadian biodiversity. This list of rare species includes an introduction in which terms are defined, the most important of which are those associated with rarity and the limits of the Canadian Arctic. As well, the criteria used to determine a taxon's rarity are described. For each taxon, a comment is included on phytogeography, occurrence, and rare status in other parts of Canada. A distribution map showing known occurrences in the Canadian Arctic is included for each species.

This list was compiled to promote awareness of rare plants in Canada's flora, and also to promote awareness of their ecosystems and the need to preserve them. The list includes all native taxa, above the rank of form, that are rare in each of the provinces and/or territories in which they occur. Hybrids and naturalized species are not included. Information given for each includes scientific name and authority, synonyms, family name, references, endemism, nature conservancy rank, Canadian priority, and Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada status. Plants are also listed by family, endemic, province or territory, and priority.

The bulk of the botanical information, published here for the first time, has resulted from the writer's own collection in the course of brief visits in July and August of 1949 to about a dozen points each in Banks and Victoria islands (Porsild, 1950) and to a visit in 1953 to central Axel Heiberg Island. Valuable additional collections, ranging in size from a few to scores, or in a few instances to one hundred or more specimens, have been contributed by scientists working in other fields, by surveyors, or by chance travellers to islands of the Western Archipelago, whose collections have been deposited in the National Herbarium of Canada.
