Rapid Modelling and Quick Response presents new research developments in the fields of rapid modelling and quick response linked with performance improvements (based on lead time reduction, etc., as well as financial performance measures). The papers and teaching cases in this book were presented at the second Rapid Modelling Conference: "Quick Response – Intersection of Theory and Practice". The main focus of this collection is the transfer of knowledge from theory to practice, providing the theoretical foundations for successful performance improvement. This conference volume challenges the traditional notions of rapid modelling, and offers valuable contributions to the scientific communities of operations management, production management, supply chain management, industrial engineering and operations research. Rapid Modelling and Quick Response will give the interested reader (researcher, as well as practitioner) a good overview of new developments in this field.

A Perspective on Two Decades of Rapid Modeling It is an honor for me to be asked to write a foreword to the Proceedings of the 1st Rapid Modeling Conference. In 1987, when I coined the term “Rapid Modeling” to denote queuing modeling of manufacturing systems, I never imagined that two decades later there would be an international conference devoted to this topic! I am delighted to see that there will be around 40 presentations at the conference by leading researchers from aroundthe world, and about half of these presentationsare represented by written papers published in this book. I congratulate the conference organizers and program committee on the success of their efforts to hold the ?rst ever conference on Rapid Modeling. Attendees at this conferencemight?nd it interesting to learn about the history of the term Rapid Modeling in the context it is used here. During the fall of 1986 I was invited to a meeting at the Headquarters of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in Dearborn, Michigan. By that time I had successfully demonstrated s- eral industry applications of queuing network models at leading manufacturers in the USA. Although in principle the use of queuing networks to model manufact- ing systems was well known in the OR/MS community and many papers had been published, the actual use of suchmodelsby manufacturingprofessionalswas almost nonexistent.

This handbook surveys important stochastic problems and models in manufacturing system operations and their stochastic analysis. Using analytical models to design and control manufacturing systems and their operations entail critical stochastic performance analysis as well as integrated optimization models of these systems. Topics deal with the areas of facilities planning, transportation, and material handling systems, logistics and supply chain management, and integrated productivity and quality models covering: • Stochastic modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems • Design, analysis, and optimization of manufacturing systems • Facilities planning, transportation, and material handling systems analysis • Production planning, scheduling systems, management, and control • Analytical approaches to logistics and supply chain management • Integrated productivity and quality models, and their analysis • Literature surveys of issues relevant in manufacturing systems • Case studies of manufacturing system operations and analysis Today’s manufacturing system operations are becoming increasingly complex. Advanced knowledge of best practices for treating these problems is not always well known. The purpose of the book is to create a foundation for the development of stochastic models and their analysis in manufacturing system operations. Given the handbook nature of the volume, introducing basic principles, concepts, and algorithms for treating these problems and their solutions is the main intent of this handbook. Readers unfamiliar with these research areas will be able to find a research foundation for studying these problems and systems.

As the customer is demanding more sustainable and affordable products, the supply chains have to find innovative ways to fulfill this need. In this context, collaboration as well as optimization methods are becoming even more evident to enhance supply chain structure to an efficient and sustainable approach. While collaboration and optimization increase complexity and susceptibility, risk management needs to be applied concurrently. This volume, edited by Wolfgang Kersten, Thorsten Blecker and Christian Ringle, provides valuable insights into: - Sustainability in Logistics - Sustainability and collaboration practices - Supply chain risk management - Optimization methods in supply chain management. This volume addresses timely and relevant topics. Both researchers and practitioners are addressed and can obtain background information from current distributions by international authors presenting a state of the art research overview.

In the forthcoming decades, Eurasia will be a place of new growth and prosperity. China is rapidly increasing international infrastructure investments, such as stimulating the One Belt One Road Programme (or the Belt and Road Initiative) which will serve different European cities. This book covers block trains, intermodal and multimodal transport, piggyback transport, single-wagon transport and other types of freight traffic, offering an up-to-date, Eurasian perspective filled with many cases and models (with software re-creating the real world) that help the reader to understand the dynamics of the unprecedented changes that have taken place in logistics and supply chain management. The simulation process and systems approach are described in a simple and step-by-step format, allowing the reader to build models from scratch. Through the basics and essential concepts detailed here, even complete beginners will be able to quickly grasp the idea of the usability of a dynamic systems approach for managing Eurasian intermodal supply chains.
