Many people have been victims of rape, but we are all victims of what has been called a "rape culture." This topic deserves more attention towards education and prevention, and not just on the college campus. Rape culture is an idea that links rape and sexual violence to the culture of a society, and in which commonly-held beliefs, attitudes, and practices normalize, excuse, tolerate, and even condone rape. This edited collection examines rape culture in the context of the current programming-attitudes, education, and awareness. Contributors explore changing the programming in terms of educational processes, practices, and experiences associated with rape culture across diverse cultural, historical, and geographic locations. The complexity of rape culture is discussed from a variety of contexts and perspectives, as this volume contains interdisciplinary academic submissions from educators and students, as well as experiential accounts from members of various community settings who are doing work aimed at making a positive difference towards programming change.

The Heinous Offence of Rape has been dealt with under the Indian Penal Code not as a mere provision with a limited scope but has acquired a very wide dimension in terms of its definition as well as scope. The rape laws in India have evolved with time due to growing brutality of this barbaric crime in the country. The provision has seen important amendments over the years on the recommendation and suggestion of various Law Commission Reports and various landmark judgements highlighting the growing need for a much more stringent law to curb the gravity of the offence of rape. Even though the IPC was codified in the year 1860 i.e., about 160 years ago with provisions considered very stringent in terms of the punishments laid down for different offences therein, it has somewhere failed to achieve its purpose. Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. Despite such harsh penalties against it, the gruesome act that has penetrated in the form of Rape has only escalated. During the process of writing this book the authors came across shocking events and instances of Rape that shows the inhumanity that prevails in the country which is much beyond any law. The most distressing fact was the inhumane conditions that victims have to suffer due to the taboo of Rape and the stigma attached with this crime. Despite going through such a horrific crime, the victims rather than receiving a proper relief have to undergo severe mental and physical agony. The inspiration for this book was derived from the fact that India is a democratic country with a robust legal framework, however, it lacks a stringent legal enforcement mechanism due to which such a gruesome and barbaric act of inhumanity is on the rise. From 1950 to 1980, activists in the black freedom and women's liberation movements mounted significant campaigns in response to the injustices of rape. These activists challenged the dominant legal and social discourses of the day and redefined the political agenda on sexual violence for over three decades. How activists framed sexual violence--as either racial injustice, gender injustice, or both--was based in their respective frameworks of oppression. The dominant discourse of the black freedom movement constructed rape primarily as the product of racism and white supremacy, whereas the dominant discourse of women's liberation constructed rape as the result of sexism and male supremacy. In The Injustices of Rape, Catherine O. Jacquet is the first to examine these two movement responses together, explaining when and why they were in conflict, when and why they converged, and how activists both upheld and challenged them. Throughout, she uses the history of antirape activism to reveal the difficulty of challenging deeply ingrained racist and sexist ideologies, the unevenness of reform, and the necessity of an intersectional analysis to combat social injustice.
