Excerpt from Rambles in Search of Shells, Land, and Freshwater The body of every mollusk with which we are con cerned, except those of the slug family, is contained in a membranous sac called the mantle, which not only serves as a model on which the shell is moulded, but is liberally provided at the edges of its open end with the glands that secrete the shelly matter. To this set of glands alone are due the coloured bands and other markings in the shells, as may be seen in the case of a fractured specimen that had been repaired by the owner; in this, the new matter thrown out of the mantle under the fracture is always colourless. Excerpt from The Land and Fresh Water Shells of the British Isles: With Illustrations of All the Species On several occasions I have been taken, or (as I would fain hope) mistaken, for a lunatic. On the last occasion I had wandered forth with the twofold object of escaping for a time from the din and turmoil of our British Babylon, and of enjoying a "ramble in search of shells." Pursuing a path that led across some meadows, I came upon a little band of working men, who, seated under a hedge, were spending their Saturday afternoon holiday in the full enjoyment of the "fragrant weed," and of an occasional "pull" at a soda-water bottle containing a liquid not unlike water in colour, and very like "Old Tom" in fragrance. After passing the happy group, a very few paces brought me to a likely-looking spot wherein to find some of the objects of my search, to wit, a deep and tolerably dry ditch; so down I went into it and disappeared. I well knew what would follow; the men who had witnessed the mad-like act followed and peered at me as I "grubbed" about the bottom of the ditch. Excerpt from Rambles of a Naturalist Round Folkestone: With Occasional Papers on the to and Are Added, Lists of Plants, Which Are and Land and Freshwater Shells This little volume, which I would fain hope, may prove an acceptable Vade-mecum to all lovers of Nature who may either reside in the district, or may honour us with occasional visits, has been published in consequence of the numerous enquiries made every season by our Naturalist-Visitors, as to what there is to be found, and where to search for it. Folkestone is, by this time, a. household word in the mouth of every naturalist; few places can compete with it in the variety and abundance of its "Common Objects." This is shown conclusively, I think, in the lists appended, wherein are enumerated about 700 species of Plants, and the same number of species of Lepidoptera. In the first part I have endeavoured to show, in language as free from scientific technicalities as possible, what natural objects of interest may be noticed in ordinary rambles in our own immediate neighbourhood. The second part consists of a selection of papers, some of which have been read before our Natural History Society, while the others are reprints from Science Gossip (by kind permission of the Editor). They all relate to the Folkestone Fauna and Flora. Part three contains lists of species known to occur here. It will be noticed that in them I have not given any localities. Excerpt from A Manual of American Land Shells The following pages form an enlarged and revised edition of The Land and Freshwater Shells of North America, Part I, published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1869. Subsequently-described species are added. Fuller attention is given in separate chapters to the sub jects of geographical distribution, organs of generation, jaw and lingual dentition, and classification. In the descriptive portion of the work the species are grouped geographically rather than systematically, an ar rangement which at first seems awkward to our confirmed habits, but which, on consideration, is justified by the fact that the political di visions of the continent do not agree with the limits of all the various pulmonate faunas.
