This early work by Richard Austin Freeman was originally published in 1923 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'The Cat's Eye' is one of Freeman's novels of crime and mystery. The first story featuring his well-known protagonist Dr. Thorndyke - a medico-legal forensic investigator - was published in 1907, and although Freeman's early works were seen as simple homages to his contemporary, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he quickly developed his own style: The 'inverted detective story', in which the identity of the criminal is shown from the beginning, and the story then describes the detective's attempt to solve the mystery.

When Andrew Drayton, a collector of jewelry, is found stabbed to death and the young woman who tried to stop the murderer is wounded, Dr Thorndyke is called in to investigate. But although the scene of the crime seems awash with the fingerprints of the attacker, there may be good reason why the police can't trace the killer. But not only are the facts of the case proving to be vexing but the discovery of a secret chamber and its sinister contents help to reveal that this is no ordinary murder and no ordinary murderer is behind it.

The Cat's Eye by R. Austin Freeman is a remarkable detective fiction tale about the elusive yet quick-witted Dr. Thorndyke and his adventures tracking a lost and precious necklace. Excerpt: "I am not a superstitious man. Indeed superstition, which is inseparably bound up with ignorance or disregard of evidence would ill-accord with the silken gown of a King's Counsel."
