La thèse porte sur l'analyse mathématique de problèmes issus de la mécanique unilatérale et de l'optimisation. Dans une première partie, nous étudions les propriétés d'un algorithme de type proximal qui peut être interprété comme l'équation discrétisée d'un oscillateur non linéaire soumis à des forces de frottement modélisés par un opérateur sous-différentiel. On étend l'étude au cadre général des opérateurs maximaux monotones dans un espace de Hilbert. Sous certaines conditions, la suite générée par l'algorithme est fortement convergente et sa limite est atteinte en un nombre fini d'itérations. Sinon, dans un contexte plus large, nous prouvons que la convergence est géométrique. Dans une deuxième partie, nous étudions un système dynamique continu : une équation des ondes amorties par un frottement sec avec conditions de Dirichlet au bord. Après avoir établi l'existence et l'unicité d'une solution du système, l'objectif principal est d'en étudier les propriétés asymptotiques. Dans deux situations significatives, on met en évidence un phénomène de dichotomie : la solution converge en temps fini, ou bien la convergence est exponentielle. Des conditions sont également données qui garantissent la stabilisation en temps fini du système vers une solution stationnaire. Une autre partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'étude de l'algorithme de gradient à pas variable. Le but est de montrer l'intérêt de prendre en compte la notion de courbure dans les méthodes de gradient. Nous obtenons des résultats de convergence linéaire sans condition de forte convexité. Des variantes de l'algorithme sont également étudiées notamment en considérant différentes expressions du pas dépendant de la courbure. Une large partie de l'étude porte sur la version implicite du schéma, rentrant ainsi dans le champ des méthodes du point proximal.

The introduction contains information about distribution by country, institutions, period, and by gender, about mathematical density, and mobility of mathematicians. Several appendices are included (female doctorate holders, doctorates in mathematics education, doctorates awarded by African universities to non-Africans, doctoral theses by non-Africans about mathematics in Africa, activities of African mathematicians at the service of their communities). Paulus Gerdes compiled the information in his capacity of Chairman of the African Mathematical Union Commission for the History of Mathematics in Africa (AMUCHMA).
