A Five year strategic plan for work health and safety in Queensland 2019 -2023 has been developed in response to the recommendations of the Best Practice Review of Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. The four areas for focus which have been identified from this review are: embracing innovation and technology; designing healthy and safe work; fostering a culture of health and safety; and, regulating effectively.

In October 2016, the Queensland Government announced that a best practice review of work health and safety laws was to be undertaken in response to the fatalities at Dreamworld and an Eagle Farm worksite in 2016. In particular, the high profile incident at Dreamworld, which resulted in four fatalities due to the catastrophic failure of an amusement device, raised concerns about the regulation of public safety matters in Queensland. The aim of this particular review was to consider WHSQ's effectiveness in light of contemporary regulatory practice. This included reviewing all WHSQ's functions including inspections, investigations, prosecutions, enforceable undertakings, research, strategy and policy development, information and education and awareness campaigns. The report from Mr Lyons made 58 recommendations, the majority of which relate to operational improvements for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland or the Workplace Health and Safety Board.

Downstream log processing is poorly developed in Uganda, mainly dominated by many small-scale informal sawmills. Timber processing can be a hazardous occupation, with hazards from the use of machinery, handling heavy materials, working at heights and exposure to dust, noise and chemicals, potentially harmful events can happen at any time. Such occupational health risks are expected to be higher in developing countries than in the industrialized countries, mainly due to socioeconomic and political differences. Small-scale sawmillers are usually mainly focused on remaining profitable, and other considerations, such as safety, are not high priority. This report provides expert advice and technical assistance to support forestry officials, sawmill managers and supervisors to acquire skills and knowledge in downstream processing and utilization. It features elements such as hazard identification exercises for wood processing industries in Uganda and identifying hazard reduction measures in wood processing industries. The report focusses on the development of an occupational health and safety strategy for downstream processing in Uganda, with a specific focus on pine sawmilling, as per the focus of the SPGS programme.
