The aim of systematic theology is to engage not only the head but also the heart and hands. Only recently has the church compartmentalized these aspects of life—separating the academic discipline of theology from the spiritual disciplines of faith and obedience. This multivolume work brings together rigorous historical and theological scholarship with spiritual disciplines and practical insights—characterized by a simple, accessible, comprehensive, Reformed, and experiential approach. In this volume, Joel R. Beeke and Paul M. Smalley shift from the doctrine of God (theology proper) to the doctrine of humanity (anthropology) and the doctrine of Christ (Christology). This extensive reformed theology explores the Bible's teaching about who we are and why we were created, as well as who Jesus is and why his divinity is essential to the Christian faith.

Excerpt from Puritan Theology, Vol. 2 of 2: Or, Law, Grace, and Truth, Being Discourses Polemical, Practical, and Historical The only remark of a prefatory kind that I have to make respect ing the contents of this second volume is, that they were not designed to form a separate volume. But the first volume grew so' much in my hands while the printers were at work, that it became necessary to divide the work, not only into two parts, but into two volumes. The Sermons and Discourses in this volume, although taken very much at random from the manuscripts in my desk, arrange themselves in a not unnatural series. The first is designed to indicate a threefold aspect Of the Chris tian or Spiritual life in knowledge, love, and practical duty. The second indicates the relation of Christ and his people to the Law and the Prophets. And the third treats of the law Of Christian Discipleship or Self-denial, the daily Cross, and the following of Christ. In the fourth sermon several causes of spiritual declension are enumerated, and the sixth exhibits the efficacy of faith in the transforming of the soul into the image or likeness of Christ. The fifth is a fragment inserted to suit the printer's arrangements. The sermon on The Beauty, Shadow, and Fruit Of Christ, is designed to present Christ in certain aspects of his manifold glory, so that looking to Him we may rest in Him and in His love. The text is from the Beulah-land of Holy Scripture - the Song of Songs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Petrus van Mastricht’s Theoretical and Practical Theology presents one of the most comprehensive methods of treating Christian doctrine. In it, Mastricht treats every theological topic according to a four-part approach: exegetical, dogmatic, elenctic, and practical. As a body of divinity, it combines a rigorous, scholastic treatment of doctrine with the pastoral aim of preparing people to live for God through Christ. Students and pastors will find it a valuable model for moving from the text of Scripture to doctrinal formulation that will edify the people of God. Volume 2, Faith in the Triune God , delivers a thorough treatment of the doctrine of God. Mastricht begins his consideration of theology proper with a substantial chapter on saving faith, reminding readers that contemplating God apart from true faith will fall short of the salvation of their soul. Mastricht then discusses the subject of God in three main divisions. First, he treats the existence of God and our knowledge of him. Second, he discusses the divine essence as it is revealed through the names and attributes of God. Third, Mastricht carefully details the Trinitarian nature of the one God who subsists in three persons.
