This method of drainage promises, under favorable conditions, to be more successful than any previously undertaken and the apparent ease with which these pumps lowered the water table has led western engineers to take an unusual interest in it. The fundamental principles involved in lowering a water table by pumping were not new, but until this time they had not been demonstrated as applicable to the drainage of waterlogged and alkali lands of the irrigated regions.
