Moderator design for pulsed neutron sources is becoming more and more an interface area between source designers and instrument designers. Although there exists a high degree of flexibility, there are also physical and technical limitations. This paper aims at pointing out these limitations and examining ways to extend the current state of moderator technology in order to make the next generation neutron sources even more versatile and flexible tools for science in accordance with the users' requirements. The applications of the use of cold neutrons for condensed matter research at accelerator-based spallation sources are less well-known than that of the use of cold neutrons at reactor sources. This book represents the outcome of the first international workshop on “Materials Research Using Cold Neutrons at Pulsed Sources”. It consists of overviews of the present status and future trends in research opportunities using cold neutrons, as well as topical papers focusing on the areas of small-angle neutron scattering, reflectivity and spectroscopic studies of a rich variety of materials, from adsorbed molecules to thin films to coal to metallic glasses. These papers will benefit researchers who are interested in the characterization of microscopic properties of advanced materials.

Moderators using liquid and solid methane and liquid hydrogen are currently in use at major spallation neutron sources. Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE) is planning the use of liquid methane as part of a major update program planned in about three years time. This report presents a general overview of some of these devices and outlines the general engineering design of the proposed LANSCE moderator, including some suggested solutions to the radiation damage problems of methane. Also included is a brief overview of a possible combined H2/Ch4 moderator for high intensity proton beams. 15 figs.
