Electrical Engineering High-Power Microwave Sources and Technologies A volume in the IEEE Press Series on RF and Microwave Technology Roger D. Pollard and Richard Booton, Series Editors Written by a prolific group of leading researchers, High-Power Microwave Sources and Technologies focuses primarily on the high-power microwave (HPM) technology most appropriate for military applications. It highlights the advances achieved from 1995 to 2000 as the result of a US Department of Defense (DoD) funded, $15 million Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program. The grant created a synergy between researchers in the DoD laboratories and the academic community, and established links with the microwave vacuum electronics industry, which has led to unprecedented collaborations that transcend laboratory and disciplinary boundaries. This essential reference provides the history, state-of-the-art, and possible future of HPM source research and technologies. The first alternative to the multiplicity of detailed applications-based HPM books and journal articles, this book familiarizes the reader with recent advances in this rapidly changing field. It presents a compendium of valuable information on HPM sources, representing significant enabling technologies, including beam and rf control, cathodes, windows, and computational techniques. The era of utilizing computational techniques to electronically design an HPM source prior to actually building the hardware has arrived. Gain insight into proven techniques and solutions that will enhance your source design. High-Power Microwave Sources and Technologies is an invaluable resource to researchers active in the field, faculty, graduate and post-graduate students. Special Note: All royalties realized from the sale of this book will fund the future research and publications activities of graduate students in the HPM field.

In the two decades since the presentation of the first experimental results, the study of high-power microwaves (HPM) has aimed at the production of microwave pulses with ever higher peak power and ever larger energy content. Drawing on the electrical pulsed power and relativistic electron beam technologies, a mix of sources have produced power levels in excess of 1 GW and pulse energies of tens to a thousand joules in both the centimeter and millimeter wavelength ranges. The potential for military applications of such powerful bursts became a major driving force for substantial research programs -- and considerable advancements -- in the United States and the former Soviet Union. The end of the Cold War and a reexamination of national priorities has diminished the momentum of military HPM development in these countries. Nevertheless, the field hasn't reached its limits, in capability or applicability, and one sees at present a diffusion of the technology across national borders. As examples, one sees commitments in the UK, France, and China to national programs aimed at the exploration of the defensive capabilities of HPM. The purpose of this paper will be to examine the state of the art in HPM at this juncture. We will look at: (1) Peak power production; (2) Pulse energy production and the phenomenon of pulse shortening at high peak power levels; (3) Coherent phasing of multiple high-power sources; (4) Compact HPM source development; and (5) Repetitive operation of sources. We will also briefly mention some emerging applications and offer some concluding thoughts.

Volume 2 of the book begins with chapter 6, in which we have taken up conventional MWTs (such as TWTs, klystrons, including multi-cavity and multi-beam klystrons, klystron variants including reflex klystron, IOT, EIK, EIO and twystron, and crossed-field tubes, namely, magnetron, CFA and carcinotron). In chapter 7, we have taken up fast-wave tubes (such as gyrotron, gyro-BWO, gyro-klystron, gyro-TWT, CARM, SWCA, hybrid gyro-tubes and peniotron). In chapter 8, we discuss vacuum microelectronic tubes (such as klystrino module, THz gyrotron and clinotron BWO); plasma-assisted tubes (such as PWT, plasma-filled TWT, BWO, including PASOTRON, and gyrotron); and HPM (high power microwave) tubes (such as relativistic TWT, relativistic BWO, RELTRON (variant of relativistic klystron), relativistic magnetron, high power Cerenkov tubes including SWO, RDG or orotron, MWCG and MWDG, bremsstrahlung radiation type tube, namely, vircator, and M-type tube MILO). In Chapter 9, we provide handy information about the frequency and power ranges of common MWTs, although more such information is provided at relevant places in the rest of the book as and where necessary. Chapter 10 is an epilogue that sums up the authors' attempt to bring out the various aspects of the basics of and trends in high power MWTs.

This book is intended for all those professionals with interest in developing a basic background in acoustic emission and its use as a non-destructive testing technique. The monitoring of high-power microwave radar tubes is an example of the use of such techniques. This book will also be of interest to those involved in the design, maintenance and procurement of high-power microwave radar tubes. And finally, it is also intended for those students of physics and engineering interested in specializing in acoustics and acoustic techniques.

This document comprises a collection of technical notes on various aspects of high-power microwave (HPM) generation, coupling, and interaction. The notes were written between October 1983 and February 1986, and were originally distributed rather informally as Microwave Notes to members of the HPM community. It has since seemed worthwhile to edit and transcribe them, and to publish them as a single report. Time and resources did not permit either as detailed an editing job would have been desirable, or recalculation and plotting of the numerical results in a more elegant form. It is to be hoped, however, that this integrated document will prove useful to the community. The selection of topics addressed in the Microwave Notes was influenced by questions which arose at various stages of the author's involvement in HPM-related activities. The subject of pulse radiation from aperture antennas subject to turn-on time errors, for example, arose in the context of a proposed HPM generation scheme. Consideration of the scattering cross-section of a simple dipole and of its dual problem, the effective area of a thin slot, was motivated by the need to understand the penetration of such slot apertures by HPM pulses.
