Public participation may improve the quality of environmental management decisions, however, the quality of such decisions depend on the quality of the participatory process. This research examines elements seen as essential for successful public participation in Newfoundland and Labrador. It also seeks to determine whether the 2014-2024 Provincial Sustainable Forest Management Strategy (PSFMS) consultation process met the best practices criteria emerging from the literature. The research used an exploratory case study strategy to consider the specified process, with data collection methods including formal semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The findings of this research revealed that although not all of the eight best practices outlined by Reed were present in the case analyzed, they are applicable guidelines for future forest management participation processes in Newfoundland and Labrador. Two additional best practices were also identified as important for successful public engagement in the province.

This sustainable forest management strategy for Newfoundland introduces a new vision for the province's forest ecosystems, including the finding of a balance between environmental, economic, & social values while having forest ecosystems that provide viable populations of native species, a sustainable forest economy, and associated employment. This strategy report begins with statements of vision, mission, & principles, a review of the legislative & planning framework, an outline of criteria for measuring progress toward sustainable management, and identifies new initiatives. Chapter 2 describes the province's forests & ecoregions and the state of the forest industry. Chapter 3 reviews provincial timber supply analyses & forecasting. The final chapter presents actions under four strategic directions of the strategy: ecologically-based forest management, economic considerations, social considerations, and forest management in Labrador (with Aboriginal participation).

A compilation of abstracts of papers presented at the 8th International Symposium on Society and Resource Management, held June 17-22, 2000. The abstracts explore the social dimensions of managing spatial landscapes for various purposes. The theme of the symposium, "Transcending Boundaries: Natural Resource Management form Summit to Sea," provided participants with the opportunity to explore the challenges of working across conceptual, cultural, and physical boundaries. The symposium focused on how social science research is being brought to bear on the exploration of "boundary issues" in resource management.
