Microbial ecology is one of the fastest growing fields of microbiology. This practical volume is the bench and field scientist's guide to well-established techniques for investigating microbial communities. Both for biologists just entering the field and for experienced researchers wishingto explore new areas, this book provides the theoretical background, detailed protocols, and tips from experts for working in this field. Chapters on bacteria with interesting metabolic traits are augmented with chapters on molecular techniques, lipid analysis, and appropriate sampling techniques. The final section includes up-to-date information on biofilm development and study, the science and practice of bioremediation, modeling of biological systems (including the most useful statistical parameters), and the study of phylogenetics.

The book is a manual of protocols for working with protozoa with chapters written by experts in the study of various protozoa (both free living and parasitic). It is one of the few sources for media and isolation techniques for these organisms. The format allows removal of pages for photocopy for use as teaching or bench laboratory aids. Major sections include chapters related to isolation, cultivation, and cryopreservation of protozoa; ecological methods; fixation, staining, light and electron microscopic techniques for protozoa; molecular analysis of protozoa; and educational experiments and demonstrations using protozoa.

Ciliated protozoa are one of the most relevant biological communities in the reactors of wastewater treatment plants. These organisms are excellent tools to assess the biological status of the reactor being used to monitor wastewater treatment plants performance. This book has been designed to simplify identification of ciliates, bearing in mind the difficulties on the manipulation and proper identification of these species. The specific role of ciliates in WWTP is discussed; methods for observation together with a glossary of scientific words and a simple and easy key to the taxonomic groups of ciliates are also provided. Illustrations, drawings, photographs and brief morphological descriptions of the species are included. Guidelines for the Identification of Ciliates in Wastewater Treatment Plants is the first book to use the new official classification proposed by the Society of Protozoologists (2005). It includes a complete chapter on methodology that is designed to be easy to follow and reproduce. A simple key to classify main taxonomic groups and genera is included, as are detailed descriptions to aid observation and identification of species of ciliates, in addition to drawings and photographs that accurately reproduce ciliate species.

A significant portion of basic and applied life science research requires microorganisms as study specimens. Managing Microorganisms aims to be the standard reference for anyone who works with microorganisms, primarily bacteria and fungi. It is applicable to researchers who maintain their own collections of strains, and those who use one of the many public service culture collections. Managing Microorganisms is an essential reference for anyone working with microorganisms and culture collections. In addition, it will be of great use for academic researchers and students in applied life sciences, especially those who are involved in sourcing and maintaining reference strains, whilst it also will provide a useful guide for consultants, biotechnologists and other members of bioindustry.

Manual of Techniques in Invertebrate Pathology, Second Edition, describes a wide range of techniques used in the identification, isolation, propagation/cultivation, bioassay, quantification, preservation, and storage of the major groups of entomopathogens, including entomophthorales, entomopathogenic fungi, entomopathogenic bacteria of the Bacilli, Nematode parasites, and pathogens and parasites of terrestrial molluscs. The book presents the perspectives of an international group of experts in the fields of invertebrate pathology, including microbiology, mycology, virology, nematology, biological control, and integrated pest management. Organized into 15 chapters, the book covers methods for the study of virtually every major group of entomopathogen, as well as methods for discovery and diagnosis of entomopathogens and the use of complementary methods for microscopy. It discusses the use of molecular techniques for identifying and determining phylogeny, factors that contribute to resistance to entomopathogens, and several other aspects of the science of invertebrate pathology. It also explains initial handling and diagnosis of diseased invertebrates, basic techniques in insect virology, and bioassay of bacterial entomopathogens against insect larvae. In addition, the reader is introduced to the use of bacteria against soil-inhabiting insects and preservation of entomopathogenic fungal cultures. The remaining chapters focus on research methods for entomopathogenic microsporidia and other protists, how the pathogenicity and infectivity of entomopathogens to mammals are tested, and preparations of entomopathogens and diseased specimens for more detailed study using microscopy. Experienced insect pathologists, biologists, entomologists, students, biotechnology personnel, technicians, those working in the biopesticide industry, and government regulators will find this manual extremely helpful. - Step-by-step instructions for the latest techniques on how to isolate, identify, culture, bioassay and store the major groups of entomopathogens - New edition fully updated to address changes in the taxonomy of the vast majority of taxa - Discussion of safety testing of entomopathogens in mammals and also broader methods such as microscopy and molecular techniques - Provides extensive supplemental literature and recipes for media, fixatives and stains
