Protection of Wind Turbine Generators Using Microcontroller-Based Applications focuses on the application of microcontrollers in the protection of wind turbine generators. The book looks at the design and implementation of a versatile digital overcurrent (OC), OV/UV, OF/UF, and negative sequence relays, and addresses the dynamic behaviour of a wind-driven induction generator (IG) connected to a power system grid through a transmission line. The transient responses of protective devices associated with the IG are also studied. Modelling of the digital relay for wind turbine generator protection using MATLAB Simulink consider most of the aerodynamic and mechanical effects that can influence instantaneous output voltage, current, and power. Coverage also includes different AC fault types, a detailed theoretical analysis of fault and protection strategy in AC fault, and the different types of fault detection algorithms to maintain power system reliability.

Generally, sources for power generation are broken down into two categories: thermal and non-thermal. Thermal sources for power generation include combustion, geothermal, solar, nuclear, and waste heat, which essentially provide heat as a means for power generation. This book examines non-thermal (mechanical, electrochemical, nanoscale self-powered, and hybrid) sources of power generation and emphasizes recent advances in distributed power generation systems. Key Features Details recent advances made in wind power, including onshore, offshore, fixed and floating platform, and air wind energy systems, and offers detailed assessments of progress Covers advances in generation of hydropower, exploring dam hydropower, novel wave energy converters, and novel systems and turbines for hydrokinetic energy conversion to power Examines all types of fuel cells and their multi-functional roles, along with hybrid fuel cell systems in complete detail Explores advances in the development of self-powered nanogenerators for use in portable, wearable, and implantable power electronics Focuses on technologies with the best commercial possibilities and provides perspectives on future challenges that need to be solved This book will be of value to all researchers in academia, industry, and government interested in pursuing power generation technologies and seeking a comprehensive understanding of available and emerging non-thermal power generation sources. Readers who are interested in learning about thermal power generation sources can find it in the author’s companion text Advanced Power Generation Systems: Thermal Sources (2023).

This book contains accepted papers presented at SOCO 2022 conference held in the beautiful and historic city of Salamanca (Spain), in September 2022. Soft computing represents a collection or set of computational techniques in machine learning, computer science, and some engineering disciplines, which investigate, simulate, and analyze very complex issues and phenomena. After a thorough peer-review process, the 17th SOCO 2022 International Program Committee selected 64 papers which are published in these conference proceedings and represent an acceptance rate of 60%. In this relevant edition, a particular emphasis was put on the organization of special sessions. Seven special sessions were organized related to relevant topics such as machine learning and computer vision in Industry 4.0; time series forecasting in industrial and environmental applications; optimization, modeling, and control by soft computing techniques; soft computing applied to renewable energy systems; preprocessing big data in machine learning; tackling real-world problems with artificial intelligence. The selection of papers was extremely rigorous to maintain the high quality of the conference. We want to thank the members of the program committees for their hard work during the reviewing process. This is a crucial process for creating a high-standard conference; the SOCO conference would not exist without their help.

Unlike conventional power plants, wind plants emit no air pollutants or greenhouse gases—and wind energy is a free, renewable resource. However, the induction machines commonly used as wind generators have stability problems similar to the transient stability of synchronous machines. To minimize power, frequency, and voltage fluctuations caused by network faults or random wind speed variations, control mechanisms are necessary. Wind Energy Systems: Solutions for Power Quality and Stabilization clearly explains how to solve stability and power quality issues of wind generator systems. Covering fundamental concepts of wind energy conversion systems, the book discusses several means to enhance the transient stability of wind generator systems. It also explains the methodologies for minimizing fluctuations of power, frequency, and voltage. Topics covered include: An overview of wind energy and wind energy conversion systems Fundamentals of electric machines and power electronics Types of wind generator systems Challenges in integrating wind power into electricity grids Solutions for power quality problems Methods for improving transient stability during network faults Methods for minimizing power fluctuations of variable-speed wind generator systems This accessible book helps researchers and engineers understand the relative effectiveness of each method and select a suitable tool for wind generator stabilization. It also offers students an introduction to wind energy conversion systems, providing insights into important grid integration and stability issues.

This book looks at the control of voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC). The objective is to understand the control structure of the VSC-HVDC system and establish the tuning criteria for the proportional-integral (PI) control of the converter controllers. Coverage includes modeling of the VSC-based HVDC transmission system using MATLAB and Simulink simulation package; implementation of control strategies for the VSC-based HVDC transmission system; and analysis of the developed system behavior under different conditions (normal and fault conditions). The book provides researchers, students, and engineers working in electrical power system transmission and power electronics and control in power transmission with a good understanding of the VSC-based HVDC transmission system concept and its behavior.
