The National Institute on Out-of-School-Time (NIOST) investigated partnership strategies between community-based organizations conducting afterschool programs and the schools they serve. NIOST used in-depth phone interviews and site visits to collect information on several community-based organization afterschool programs and their affiliated schools. This publication highlights three partnership strategies (Curricular Connections, Program Directors as Resource Connectors, and Dedication to Partnership) that contribute towards meaningful and rewarding collaborations. In bringing the experiences of program providers, schools, and community organizations together, NIOST can learn and share strategies for strengthening the afterschool program field. A "Promising Practice" is a system, process, or activity in a program that works and leads to good results. It is something that would work in other programs, if only they were aware about it. "Promising Practices" capture some of the most innovative, creative and successful ways that programs serve youth. This publication provides a selection of the strong, effective and replicable practices that are currently being utilized in "New Jersey After 3" afterschool programs. By sharing these practices, "New Jersey After 3" hopes to assist programs in incorporating approaches and strategies that have been already field tested and refined by their peers, leading to an expansion of quality services throughout the network. These services, in turn, should fulfill the needs of today's young people.

Recipient of AERA Outstanding Contributions Relating Theory to Practice Award: Interpretive Scholarship for 2004 This is the second in a series of monographs by the Family, School, Community Partnership (FSCP) Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association. Parent involvement, as one of the eight National Education Goals in 1994, has brought heightened awareness to the importance of connecting educational institutions and their communities. The goal envisions “school partnerships that will increase parent involvement and participation in promoting the social, emotional, and academic growth of children.” The U.S. Congress additionally supported this goal in the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. This act is the renewal of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and strongly promotes schools’ active involvement with families and the surrounding community.
