In this paper some concepts of convex analysis are extended in an intrinsic way from the Euclidean space to the sphere. In particular, relations between convex sets in the sphere and pointed convex cones are presented. Several characterizations of the usual projection onto a Euclidean convex set are extended to the sphere and an extension of Moreau' s theorem for projection onto a pointed convex cone is exhibited.

COMPSTAT symposia have been held regularly since 1974 when they started in Vienna. This tradition has made COMPSTAT a major forum for the interplay of statistics and computer sciences with contributions from many well known scientists all over the world. The scientific programme of COMPSTAT '96 covers all aspects of this interplay, from user-experiences and evaluation of software through the development and implementation of new statistical ideas. All papers presented belong to one of the three following categories: - Statistical methods (preferable new ones) that require a substantial use of computing; - Computer environments, tools and software useful in statistics; - Applications of computational statistics in areas of substantial interest (environment, health, industry, biometrics, etc.).

This book presents a method of establishing explicit solutions to classical problems of calculating the best lower and upper mean-variance bounds. The following families of distributions are taken into account: arbitrary, symmetric, symmetric unimodal, and U-shaped. The book is addressed to students, researchers, and practitioners in statistics and applied probability. Most of the results are recent, and a significant part of them has not been published yet. Numerous open problems are stated in the text.

The concept of closed convex cones in finite dimensional Euclidian space and their duals has proven to be a usefull construct. Here dual cones are exhibited for specific closed, convex cones including those pertaining to starshaped orderings and concave (convex) functions. Applications include finding projections involving starshaped orderings, generalizations of Kimball's inequality, an inequality for concave (convex) functions and a characterization of certain kinds of positive dependence.
