The Black Sea region is a significant geographical area with its rich natural resources, expanding market opportunities, and important corridors for energy flows and transportation at the intersection of Europe, central Asia and the Middle East. The collapse of the Soviet Union widened considerations on the Black Sea region, in addition to producing a security gap and raising sensitivity and instability in the area. There are also several ongoing unresolved conflicts, environmental problems, and insufficient border controls in the Black Sea basin. On the other hand, the Black Sea region has become a center of contention for superiority and interest between some littoral countries, international organizations, and some other countries. Therefore, this paper will focus on: delineating the implications of the Black Sea region and the main threats to security and stability in the Black Sea Region; which actors have an influence on regional issues, whether the current security structure in the Black Sea area meets the 21st century's needs; and if not, what should be done to prevent conflicts, and establish an efficient security and stability system in the area for the benefit of all.

Maritime Power in the Black Sea provides the first comprehensive assessment and evaluation of the comparative maritime power of the six littoral states in the Black Sea - Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Romania and Bulgaria. This book examines the maritime capabilities and assets of each of the six littoral Black Sea states and also considers the implications of the distribution of maritime power on both regional and international security. As such it makes an important contribution to the debate about what constitutes maritime power in the twenty first century and provides a thematic comparative study of the ability of each of the littoral states of the Black Sea to project maritime power.

This volume critiques contemporary power trends by examining key bilateral dynamics between five putative ‘poles’ of the multipolar order in the twenty-first century. Written by emerging scholars and established academics, this work provides a timely and authoritative analysis of one of the most controversial and compelling security debates of the twenty-first century. Adopting a detailed case study approach, the volume examines contemporary great power relations between the US, China, Russia, India and the EU. In this publication possible ways to promote security cooperation in the Wider Black Sea Area are being addressed. The area holds major importance for Euro-Atlantic security. Strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, the region, after the dual NATO-EU enlargement in 2004-2007, became part of the periphery of the common Euro-Atlantic security system, with critical value for European energy security and the war on terrorism. The region faces a variety of security challenges, including regional conflicts, ethnic strife, terrorism, and powerful organized crime, while many of the countries have weak institutions, turbulent political systems, unstable economies and lack of democracy. In addition, the traffic of drugs to the West, the steady stream of militancy from the Middle East, and the energy lines from the oil and gas-rich regions of the East to an energy-hungry Europe gradually define the Wider Black Sea Area as a region urgently requiring political attention and investment in its security. This book develops the idea that since decolonisation, regional patterns of security have become more prominent in international politics.
