Excerpt from Progress of Education in the Century But at best this method of reform was only a makeshift. It was cumbrous and absurdly slow. It could never hope to cover the whole system of u dowed schools. Even where it reformed it could not reach the inner life of the schools and therein lay the gravest need of change. Excerpt from A Century of Education: Being a Concise History of the Rise and Progress of the Public Schools The rise and progress of public free schools in Providence is one of the most interesting and important features in its history, and the centennial year, so replete with patriotic memories, is a period eminently appropriate in which to place its educational story on record. In doing this the author has deemed it proper to bring into view the action of the town as early as 1663, and also the efforts of men on behalf of the common schools, whose enlarged ideas placed them in advance of the popular sentiment of the time. Their disinterested labors, though not immediately successful, prepared the way for the success of others who took up the work where they left it, and have secured for them an honored place among public benefactors. Excerpt from Fifty Years of American Education: A Sketch of the Progress of Education in the United States But progress in mechanical inventions is but one phase of the development of science. Per haps the most significant changes of all have taken place in medicine. Forty years ago, says Sir William Osler, the world did not know the cause Of any of the great infections. Of all the great camp diseases plague, cholera, malaria, yellow fever, typhoid fever, typhus, and dysentery we know the mode of transmission, and of all but yellow fever, the germs. Man has now control of the most malign of Nature's forces in a way never dreamt of by our fathers. Half a century has done more than a hundred centuries to solve the problem of the first importance in his progress. Such are a few of the revolutionary changes which science has ushered in in the brief period of the half century which will, it seems, be known in history as the scientific age. Darwin's epochal discovery had been given to the world in I 8 59. Huxley, Spencer, Pasteur, Berthelot, Joule, Clerk Maxwell, Tait, and Kelvin were at work and Faraday was still alive when the period we are studying began. The creation of the sciences, always a slow process, had reached a period of intensification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Brief Survey of Educational Progress During the Decade 1900 to 1910 The purpose of this survey is to set forth some of the more salient features of educational development in the United States during the first decade of the new century. No one who has watched this growth will believe that it is possible to express it in any sort of completeness by statistical methods alone; but some of the more general and objective features can be handled in this manner, and by means of comparisons; general movements forward or backward may be seen. School statistics generally avail able, however, are faulty, and no amount-of effort can correct them so long as the various States ask for returns on different and varying bases. Hence all general conclusions reached as a result of the study of the educational statistics of the country must be taken with due allo'wance unless supported by evidence from other sources. It may not be out of place at this point to say that this office is working with all diligence to get correct and comparable returns from all States and that a plan presented looking toward this end has been indorsed by the 'department of Superintendence of the National Educational Association at the Mobile meeting in 1911. Within the coming decade it is expected that more reliable returns will'be available and that they will be ready for publication in the year to which they relate. At any rate, this bureau is determined to make the attempt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Brief History of Education: A History of the Practice and Progress and Organization of Education The present volume is an abridgment and condensation of my History of Education, issued in 1920, and has been prepared to meet the needs of normal schools and colleges which desire to teach the general history of education, but which do not have the time or the inclination to go into the subject in such detail as IS glven in the larger volume above referred to. The general plan of the two books is the same. Like the larger History of Education, the present volume is a history of the practice and progress and organization of educa tion itself, rather than a history of educational theory, and pre sents the history of education as a phase of the history of the rise and development and spread of our Western civilization. As in the larger volume, ' I have 'tried here to present such a picture of the rise, struggle for existence, growth, and recent great expan sion of the idea of the improvability of the race and the elevation and emancipation of the individual through education as would be most illuminating and useful to students of the subject. To this end I have traced the great forward steps in the emancipation of the intellect of man, and the efforts to perpetuate the progress made through the organization of educational institutions to pass on to others what had been attained.
