Then we need to furnish our people with such books and periodicals as set forth our distinctive principles as a denomi nation. How often are our principles and practices called in question and severely criticised by other denominations! How important that our people should be able at such times to defend and maintain our doctrines, as a denomination and as clearly set forth in the word of God. We believe that all the great doctrines of the Bible should be taught, but especially those that have dis tinguished us from all other denominations, such as salvation by grace, a regenerated membership, the right and scriptural observ ance of the ordinances of Christ's church. Not long since a mem ber of the Baptist church about 45 years old, after hearing a ser men on baptism, said it was the second sermon he had ever heard on the subject. That good brother has heard baptism preached as often as a great many who belong to our Baptist churches. Why is it that our own people so seldom hear a sermon on this sacred and solemn ordinance? Has it become obsolete? We do not think a preacher has the right to claim that he has preached baptism who merely refers to it in a sermon on missions or some other subject. Let there be a series of sermons on the sacred and solemn ordinance setting forth its dignity, its symbolism and who are proper subjects for its observance. There never will come a time when it will be unnecessary to preach the first fundamental principles of the christian religion. Let us see to it that every Baptist family in the bounds of the East Liberty Association have such literature as we have mentioned and that every one of them shall take the Ala bama Baptist.
