The Symposium covers most of the aspects of modern aqueous electrometallurgical practice, with a stronger emphasis on copper than zinc and nickel, which can be regarded as being the three major electrolytic metals. Of the minor electrolytic metals, there are contributions describing cobalt, lead and gold electrometallurgy, as well as the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide. The sessions divide neatly into modern copper tankhouse practice, purification techniques, modernization and automation, and new developments. A cross section of worldwide practice is represented, with a perhaps understandable concentration of Canadian operations. Plant tours to a modern zinc electrowinning operation, CEZ Inc at Valleyfield, and one of the world's largest copper refineries, Noranda Minerals, Inc., CCR Division in Montreal East, have been included as an integral part of the Symposium.

This International Symposium is sponsored by the Materials Engineering Section and the Basic Sciences Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM and co-sponsored by the Canadian Ceramic Society. Topics covered include metal matrix composites, structural ceramics, polymeric composite materials, powder metallurgical materials and interfaces.

The symposium is comprised of four sections: (1) Thermochemical Computation and Data Banks: Calculations of Thermodynamic Properties of Metallurgical Solutions. (2) Pyrometallurgical and Process Applications: Some Applications of Equilibria Calculation to Copper Pyrometallurgical Processes. (3) Heat and Mass Transfer Applications: Simulation of Microsegregation in Binary Alloys and (4) Expert Systems and Artificial Intelligence: Real Time and Artificial Intelligence Software for Chemical and Extractive Metallurgy.

The eight articles first appeared as volume 6 (no date) of Mineral processing and extractive metallurgy review. They review new methods of recovery for gold, and to some extent, silver, focus on the particular challenges of extraction from carbonaceous ores and from various sulfide-bearing ore, and the treatment of refractory gold ore, and discuss high-temperature and biological oxidation, high- temperature chlorination, and removing metals from leach liquor.
