We complete today our first semester's work. For so young an institution to have aspired to the honor of entertaining this association might have seemed presumptuous anywhere except in Chicago, but we have you with us and we bid you cordial welcome. We wanted you to come and see what we have done here. We wanted you to see our building and its equipment because it is new and we are proud of it, and because we think it stands for that which may be of interest to you. At the risk of overstepping the bounds of modesty, I am going to take it for granted that you are as much interested in us as we are in ourselves, and tell you something about our school. Lewis Institute is a secondary school. It is undertaking to do the work of a high school and a manual training school, as well as the work of the first two years of a college and a school of technology. Why undertake so much? you may ask.
